WJO DOTNEIIT FIEMJST
Americus Lad Made Heroic
Effort
There was an “Americus end” to
the drowning that occurred Saturdav
afternoon at Piedmont Lake, near At
lanta, wherein Charles Campbell, a
youth of eleven years, was drowned.
The boy was in a small canoe with
Xeonard Sawyer, of Americus, son o!
Mr. Fred L. Sawyer, now residing in
Atlanta. Young Sawyer had built the
■canoe himself and, with boyish pride
was giving it a tryout in the lake with
his little friends, Charles Campbell.
The frail craft dipped, and both
boys were thrown overboard. Youne
Sawyer could swim and made heroic
efforts to save his friends, who could
not swim. Young Campbell same
twice with Leonard Sawyer holding
to him, the two going down together.
Realizing that he could not effect a
rescue, young Sawyer let go the
drowning lad and saved himself with
difficulty, as he was well nigh ex
hausted. The body of the Campbell
lad was rushed to the Grady hospital
hut all efforts at resuscitation were In
vain.

UNWISE EVEN
IF TAFT HAS
THE VOTES
THEY MAY TURN TO HUGHES
Taft Men Are Looking Toward
ihe Justice
j Washington, I). C., June 3.—Senator
| W. Murray Crane, of Massachusetts, i".
| said to admit in whispered confidence
to his friends that he has the gravest
doubts about the possibility of “put
ting Taft over” at Chicago and to urge
the necessity of seeking away, if ii
is possible to find one, whereby a
compromise may be effected on Asso
ciate Justice Hughes without permit
ting Colonel Roosevelt to slip in and
run away with enough Taft delegates
to nominate him while the Taft forces
are being transferred to the Associate
Justice.
Senator Crane is reported to havs
I made a careful tabulation of the dele
gates counted on to support the Pres
ident and he has been able to find only
550 of them. Included in this tabula
tion are 79 from New York. It de
quires 540 to nominate. The Massa
’ chusetts Senator holds the view that
would be in the highest degree unwise,
even if it were entirely feasible, to
| seek to force the nomination of the
] President with this meagre majority of
j ten delegates in the convention in
I view of all the circumstances.
I The Senator is reliably reported to
L have gone so far in his anxiety to
! bring about a compromise on Hughes
as to obtain from William Barnes, Jr.,
1 a promise to accept the Associate Jus
-1 tice if that be necessary in order to
■ defeat Colonel Roosevelt.
! So far as can be gathered, the Crane
plan seems to be to have the 79 New
York delegates, who are controlled by
Barnes, cast their vote for Hughes in
the early ballots in the convention.
Thus neither Taft nor Roosevelt would
obtain a majority in these early bal
lots. In the meanwhile all the effort
of the Taft leaders would be concern
trated on holding the rest of the Tafi
forces intact. It is figured that If thb
be done through two or three bal-
lots the Taft forces will have their
fighting spirit aroused and will-become,
thoroughly welded together. Then the
l transfer to the compromise candidate
can be attempted with a reasonable de
/gree of certainty that it will succeed,
j In discussing this plan this aftei
noon, one of the leading Taft men
from the South, whose state delegation
I ir.the Chicago convention will be prac-
tically solid for the President, de
clared it would not work. He said
instant there was a hint of compro
mise the deuegation from his state
would flock to Colonel Roosevelt. No
nower on earth could stop them, and
it would be impossible to transfer
them to any other candidate. There
fore, if the only hope of preventing the
nomination of Colonel Roosevelt lay in
transferring the Taft serenfth to
Hughes, the defeat of Roosevelt could
not be brought about.
Senator Crane not only has practi
cally given up hope of nominating
President Taft at Chicago, but he be
lieves it will be impossible to elect
-•enator Elihu Root as temporary
chairman of the convention. The Sen
ato saw President Taft to tell him
the coclusion he had reached.

USED SAGE TEA,
To Darken Ihe Hair and Re

It is easier to preserve the color of
the hair than to restore it, although
it is -ossible to do both. Our grand
mothers understood the secret. They
made a “sage tea,” and their dark,
glossy hair long after middie life was
due to this wact. Our motheis become
gray before they are fifty, but they
are beginning to appreciate the wis
dom of our grandmothers in using
"sage tea'’ for their hair and are fast
following suit.
The piesent generation has the ad
vantage of the past in that it can get
a ready-to-use preparation called
Wyeth’s Sage and Sulphur Hair Rem

perior to tne ordinary “sage tea”
made by our ~randmothers.
The growth and beauty of the hair
depends on a healthy condition of the

COMMENT
BY BRYAN
ON TAFT AND ROOSEVELT
——————
He Champions a Progressive
Candidate
Lincoln, Neb., June 3.“ Though Tatt
aparently has a majority of the Chi
cago delegates Roosevelt intends to be
a candidate before the people, and if
necessary will organize a bolting con
vention,” William J. Bryan declares in
his Commoner today. Bryan says:
“We have now approached near
enough to the Republican National
Convention to forecast the action of
that body. Roosevelt will have ap
parently a majority in the Northern
states, while Taft seems likely to have
a majority of the convention—includ
ing the Southern delegates, who rep
esent merely patronage and boodle
Roosevelt has been careful to arrange
’or contesting delegates from the
South —this was the first indication of
his intention to bolt. With a majority
|of the Northern delegates, he is in a
i position to have a convention of his
own, in case his contesting delegates
are refused admission.
“The conclusion, therefore, is that
Roosevelt would be the nominee of
the regular convention or the nominee
of a bolting convention. Get ready for
his candidacy. He is quite sure to
run.
“Can Roosevelt be defeated? Yes.
by any good progressive. A progres
sive will hold the Democratic vote
and the Republicans who oppose a
third term will do the rest. Clark and
Wilson are the leading progressive
candidates—either one of them can de
teat Roosevelt. The country will nev
er have a President for a third term.’
