THE AMERICUS DAILY TIMES RECORDER
FRUIT SHIPPING
WILL COMMAND
| ATTENTION NOW
Carloads From lhe Americus
Section This Week
Peach shipments from Americus will
begin to assume larger proportions
this week unless unfavorable weather
interferes, as the earlier shipping va
rieties are fast ripening. The rail
roads, it is said, have made ample
preparations for handling expeditious
ly the large peach crop this season.
| As in the past the fruit will be
I shipped to Atlanta, in carload lota.
;.nd there special trains will be made
' up to transport the shipments to the
eastern market centers. The specia'
trains from Atlanta are operated on ,
j passenger schedules and insure the
prompt and safe delivery of the fruit.
In anticipation of a big crop th}
railroads in conjunction with the Fruit
Growers’ Express have been assem
bling the refrigerator cars in Georgia
territory. It is announced there will
be plenty of cars no matter how big
the crop is. These cars are being sta
tioned in close proximity to the sev
eral peach centers.
The fruit growers have been re
quested to estimate their needs can
fully and not to order more cars than
they can use. During previous sea
sons some growers have suffered from
a lack of cars despite the fact thn 1
there were plenty, many of the grow
ers having ordered more cars than
they had need for.
Only two or three scattering cars
have moved so far, but this w»eek
should see the movement of peaches
begin in earnest. Within ten days the
movement will be at Its height. Re
ports collected by the freight traffic
department of the Central of Georgia
indicate that the crop in the territory
traversed by that road will total con
siderable over 3,000 cars.
Most of Georgia’s peach crop is han
dled bv the Central. The crop raised
alone the Coast Tine during a fair
season usually totals about 1,000 cars.
