Mr. William Chambliss, one of Sum

fever at his home, several miles east

MEETING OF GRAND LODGE
COLORED MASONS YESTERDAY
First Session of Meeting Opening

The' Grand Lodge of negro Masons
of Georgia assembled here yesterday
morning Grand Master H. R. Butler,
of Savannah, presiding Devotional
exercises were conducted by Rev. L. A.
Townsley, of Savannah. Grand Secre
tary Sol C. Johnson, of Savannah, call
ed the roll and it was found that a,bout
four hundred delegates were present.
Many deaths were reported among
them was that of Past Grand Master
James M. Simms. He was the first
grand master of the jurisdiction. A
special memorial service will be ihelJ
today, during which time Rev. Wm. D.
Johnson, of Plains, will preside.
Grand Master Butler submitted his
annual report telling of the demise of
143 of the members of the order. The
orphans home operated by the order
and located here in Americus has been
substantially repaired during the year
He advised the farmers to be econom
ical, live peaceable and quiet lives, pay
their honest debts and tfy to become
taxpaying citizens of their several
communities.
The grand master reported the or
ganization of several new lodges. He
informed the grand lodge that the re
lief association is in a healthy con
dition, and that it had complied with
the requirements of the state, made by
legislative enactments. He advise the
members to be cleanly in their habits
and help to build up the health of their
several communities. He said: “If
you will strive as hard to keep out of
trouble as you do to get out of it, you
will not be in trouble, and if you
will work as hard to keep good health
as you do to get well, we will suc
ceed in helping to build up healthy
communities. He reported* the juris
diction as being worth fully $200,000
in cash, including the treasuries of
the several subordinate lodges.
Sol. C. Johnson, grand secretary,
rendered his report showing that he
had collected in his department the
sum of $3,113.32. W. C. Thomas, of
Atlanta, secretary-treasurer of the
Relief association, reported that he haJ
collected during the year $33,263.31;
paid out $27,045.38, leaving a balance
on hand of $68,298.89. He reported 159
death claims paid during the year.
