'JI W. SHIVER
THE MAN WHO
BOOSTS AND BUILDS
Jno. W. Shiver has built more homes
for Americus people than any other
contractor in the city. In fact he has
“made” Americus. Not only has he
built homes but he has helped to make
Americus by boosting. Shiver is first
of ail a booster. He is the kind of man
who puts his shoulder to the wheel and
pushes harder than anyone else. When
ever the city wants anything they
know John W. Shiver is the man that
will help them get it.
The plant operated by this hustler is
the largest of it’s kind in this section
of the state. He keeps in stock any
thing and everything that goes into a
building. He can handle a contract on
a twenty story office building as easily
as an order to build the smallest of
play houses. He handles the best of
materials and employs the experienced
workmen. They make a specialty of
out of town orders.

• I have been growing watermelons
only a few years. I bought 200 acres
two years ago for $5.00 per acre, and
last year 1 rented about 20 acres more
on a 160-acre tract adjoining my land
I paid SI.OO per acre rent, and made
enough on the 20 acres in watermel
ons to buy the whole 60-acre tract,
which is a little more than one-third
cleared, for $3.75 per acre.
My land is within 2 1-2 miles of the
Andersonville Prison Park and Cem
etery. It is considered poor, sandy
land, but on it I made SI,OOO worth of.
melons on 40 acres of it. I think it is
first class for that crop, and I have
sone fine fields of soy beans, cow
peas and peanuts which will pay weii
an enrich the land, and enable me
to make good corn and melons next
year. Land prices have recently ad
vanced here, and the above grade of
land partially cleared is worth from
1 SB.OO to $12.00 per acre. Yours truly,

INFANT INDUSTRY
IS COMPELLED TO
ENLARGE WORKS
The Cannon Screen company is pro
bably the infant industry of Americus.
But it is a hefty infant. Already they
have turned out enough work to enn
%
hie them to declare a large dividend
and the concern is hardly six months
old. *
This company manufactures firs -
class windows and window screens and
screen doors. It owns the patent of
the only self-adjusting screen in the
world.
The territory covered by this enter
prising concern extends into the neigh
boring states. Plans are being made
to put additional salesmen on the road.
It has already been found necessary to
enlarge the quarters of the plant an 1
additional workmen will have to be
secured.
