FARMERS TRAVEL TO WEEVIL DISTRICT;
SAT PROSPECT THERE IS GLOOMY
Messrs. W. J. Mathis, W. A. Mc-
Cain, H. A. Petty, R. L. Saville and
K. W. Hollingsworth, who left Daw
son a week ago to visit the bell weo
vii sections of Mississippi and see for
themselves the conditions where this
pest has been for several years, re
tjrued home this week and are any
thing but optimistic as to what will
be the result when the weevils invade
southwest Georgia.
These gentlemen visited sections
around Meridian, Jackson and Yazoo
city, all prominent cotton centers,
and everywhere were met with the
same story—that cotton cannot be i
profitably grown where it has been
attacked by the weevil. It is true
that some cotton is raised, but :t i
is almost nothing in comparison to
what was grown before the weevtl ■
came. In some fields, unless a cease- i
'°ss fight is made from the time the ’
f ny cotton peeps above the ground, :

not a pound is picked.
Field Picked Twenty Times.
The method of fighting the weevil
is the planting of early varieties o‘
cotton and picking the insects' from
it almost innumerable times while it
is growing. One of the gentlemen
who went to Mississippi says he saw
■d field which had been picked twenty
times, and the weevils were still,
there in great numbers,
the farms and the farmers can afford
to spend a part of the crop picking
the weevils, but here in Georgia,
where vast quantities of fertilizers
are used, the cotton crop will not
stand the additional expense of that j
kind of a warfare to prevent its de
struction. ,
The farmers of Mississippi are de- j
versifying their crops and have turn
ed their attention to stock-raising
while lumber has become a large
and profitable industry. In this way
the effects of the loss of the greater
part of the cotton crop has been over
come.
Kill the Bolls, Too.
The gentlemen who have just re
turned state that contrary to the
general idea prevalent throughout
this section, the weevils do no con
fine their destruction to the squares,
but attack and destroy the bolls as
well.
They advise the farmers of South
west Georgia to begin now to pre
pare for the coming of,the weevil by
reducing their cotton acreage and
planting other crops more extensively
They say that no farmer here will be
able under weevil conditions to culti
vate more than six or seven acres of
cotton to the plow.
Lands in Sumter county that were
J worth only $lO to sls an acre five
years ago are now selling at S6O to
, $75. Cheap lands are still to be had.
I Why defer buying?

flourish and ripen in Americus from
