MOTHER OF FIVE URGES
REFORM IN COURTSHIP
Denounces Parlor Manners of
Her Daughters’ Wooers
Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 18. —It was ever
thus. Out in the red hills of Georgia
the call is tor “refawm.” In the ele
gant city parlors clubwomen suavely
discuss reform —of everything, from
the slit skirt to the ballot. Atlanta po
licemen are tainted thoroughly wkh
the reform bacteria until you can no
mere kiss the lady of your heart than
you could tousle the mustache of Chief
Fa avers witfy impunity.
I he wonder of it is how September
Morn got by.
It is everywhere thus in Georgia.
Therefore, the crusade that was be
-1
gun today by a mother in Rome, Ga.,
is no more than consistent. Heres'
a real reform, aimed at what she
says is the bad manners of the young
men of Rome who call on her daugh
ters,
They smoke cigarettes in her parlor,
these young men, and very non
chalantly, after they have known her
daughter Elizabeth ten minutes, call
her Lizzie or Liz. All this the moth
er considers-improper.
In a statement ‘‘to the public,”
meaning the mother-public, she is
asking that a stop be put to all this.
Her “Beatrice” must not be “Trixy"
to practical strangers and the picture
o f her grandfather that hangs sedate
ly over the parlor mantel must not be
wreathed in cigarette smoke. And .t
seems hard that she should be forced
1o view through the small pall the
figures of languid young men with
their feet on her parlor chairs.
At least there should be no doubt
that (his mother in Rome, who gives
the only hint of her identity by sign
ing herself “A Moher of Five Daugh
ters,” has a worthy- reform to advo
cate. The Woman’s club of Rome
will consider it when next its mem
bers meet, and the eloquent appeal
of tie “Mother of Five Daughters”
to clubwomen everywhere in Georgia
is likely to have an effect in regener
ating the parlor manners of Georgia
youths.
