PLAINS WANTS
WATERWORKS
AND ELECTRICITY
MAY MAKE AN EARLY START
In Way of Securing Hie Con
veniences
Amerieus’ little sister city, Plains, is
rapidly reaching out after all of the
; essentials of metropolitan life, and :s
going to secure whatever her enterpris
ing people want upon that line. Be
sides the latest enterprise establish-j
ed there, a modern and fully equipped
'sanitarium, Plains now wants water
works and electric lights, and has laid 1
plans for securing these necessary con
veniences. Plans for the building of
an electric plant and system of water
works are now being given very care
ful consideration by the town council
and citizens, and there is every reason
to believe that Plains will have these
conveniences at no distant date. The
rapid and substantia] growth of the
town renders the installation of these
conveniences absolutely imperative.

MOTHER PRAYS
FOR RECOVERY
OF HER BABY
New Orleans, Sept. 18. — (Special.)—l
In the Milliken meniorial hospital a
mother sits dry-eyed beside the cot of
her baby and prays ror a miracle that
will save him from death. The little
boy is so badly burned that doctors
says there is no hope.
The mother has not given up.
Anthony Scibito, the two-year-old
taby, was fatally burned Thursday
! morning when his clothing caught fire
.from an open furnace at his home at
830 North Villere street. The mother
was washing in the back yard and the
baby wandered too near the fire when
her back was turned for a moment.
When she wheeled at hearing his
screams, the little baby was wrapped
in flames. The mother rushed into the
house for a blanket which was wrap
! ped about the baby and smothered the
fire.
The little fellow was hurried to the
i Milliken memorial hospital in a dying
condition. The mother went along in
the ambulance and sat by the side of
the baby, rocking back and forth and
moaning in agony.
Mrs. Scibito built a fire in an open
j furnace to heat her iron with, and car
jried it out into the back yard where
j she was working. The little boy fol
lowed her on plump and unsteady legs.
When she turned her back for a sec
ond the baby got too close to the fur
nace and his clothes caught fire.
Mother instinct told her what to do.
She ran into the house, jerked a
blanket from a bed, ran back to the
little boy and wrapped the fold tight
ly about him. Ambulance surgeons
said that the boy would have died
before they arrived had it not been
for the prompt acton of the mother.
The baby was terribly burned from
’ the waist down. In a few seconds
that it took the mother to put out
the fire, the flames had burned the
baby limbs until they were almost
charred.
Doctors have told the mother that
death cannot be averted.
• But after the manner of mothers,
she clings to faith in one power high
er than doctors, and prays beside the
cot of the dying baby.
Politeness sometimes promotes pop
ularity where cold cash fails.

KILLS CRAZED NEGRO

WHO WIELDS AN AX

Baltimore, Md., Sept. 19.—1 n a ter
rific hand to hand combat with a crazed
negro with an axe in the garage of his
residence in Eutow Place today, Mr.
Charles Guth, of a large candy compa
ny here, shot and mortally wounded
his assailant.
The negro, George Murphy, who had
been Mr. Guth’s chauffeur, died in the
patrol wagon while being taken to the
hospital. Mr. Guth was held at the po
lice station pending investigation.
A Matter of Taste.
Mrs. Chesterfield was entertaining
a few friends at. dinner. Pomphre,’,
the aged butler, in sampling the wine
had sampled too freely and was forc
ed to send his granddaughter, Sary
Ann to take his place—an unusual oc
currence for Pomphrey. Sary Ann
with her naps tied back with a flaming
red ribbon —though more willing than
expert, got along very well until the
time came for Mrs. Chesterfield to mix
the dressing for the salad, which she
always did at the table.
“Bring me the oil,” said the hostess,
aside, to Sary Ann.
Prompt to obey, Sary Ann turned to
: the butler’s pantry; but she stopped
abruptly in the doorway, and from that
