ATLANTA. Ga., Sept. 13. —Georgia is
facing, almost without realizing it, the
I possibility of giving to remote poster
ity a monument that will outlast »he
I Sphinx and the Pyramids.
There has been some talk of using
I the northern face of Stone mountain as
a memorial or monument to the Con
federate dead. If this is accomplish
ed in a big way, the result will be one
that will be standing when the pres
et: t civilization in America has passed
: away, and even when present language
i is forgotten.
j Stone mountain is not only the larg-
I
est granite monolith in the world, but
;is made of the hardest kind of stone,
j As compared to it the stone from which
the Sphinx is carved and the Pyramids
are builded is of soft material.
Stone mountain is bigger than any
of the pyramids, the largest of which
' covers only eleven acres, and from it |
could be cut the solid blocks for a!
score of Sphinxes.
The pyramids were built approxi
mately 2500 B. C., or 4,500 years ago.
The Spinx is probably not quite as oil
as the oldest pyramids. All are
slowly wearing away, though thous-I
ands of years will pass before they I
will disappear. But 100,000 years, i
barring the cataclyysms of nature,,
will leave Stone Mountain standing, I
and if the proposed monument to the
Confederacy, instead of being merely
an inscription that will wear away in
a few’ thousand years, is sculptured
on some huge and rugged scale like
the works of the ancient Egyptians,
it will last as long as the world lasts
—for so long a time that before it
disappears, the object for w’hich it
w’as erected may be more vague than
the legendary wars of the Shepherd
Kings before Rameses and his forbears
founded Thebes.

JENNIE Mil JONES DIES
AFTER SIX WEEKS ILLNESS
LITTLE ONE CALLED BACK TO
HEAVEN ON SUNDAY.
In the death of their precious little
one, Jennie May Jones, aged nineteen
months, Mr. and Mrs. William M.
Jones have the heartfelt sympathy of
their very many friends in Americus.
After a long and painful illness of six
w eeks’ duration the little life went out
Sunday evening in Atlanta, where the
anxious parents carried her recently
in the vain hope that the treatment of
physicians there might restore her to
health.
The funeral party returned here this
morning at 5:30 o’clock, the exercises
taking place at 4 o’clock this after
noon from the residence on Rees Park,
conducted by Dr. Lansing Burrows,
pastor of First Baptist church.
Friends who bor e the little white
coffii to its last resting place in Oak
grove cemetery were Messrs. W. D.
Moreland, E. C. Jones, Jr., H. C. Da
vis and C. P. Davis.
Since their return from Florida six
weeks ago the little girl, stricken
there, grew rapidly worse, until the
end came yesterday. She was the idol
of her devoted parents, a beautifu’
bright and winsome little lass, and
her taking away brings inexpressible
sadness upon this devoted home.
dozen points at the close.
Ten cents for the finer grades was
the price put upon the staple here, with
strict middling cotton ruling at 9.3-4-:.
