Quail Disease Causes Stop
To Shipments From Mexico
WASHINGTON, D. C„ Feb. 4.
Owing to the prevalence of quail dis
ease among quail imported from
Mexico at the ports of New York, N.
Y., and Eagle Pass, Texas, during the
past month, the Department of Agri
culture has suspended issue of fur
ther permits for entry of these birds
this season. Quail in shipments ac
tually en route to the United States
on January 20 will be admitted to
quarantine, but no further entries
will be authorized. Most of the states
now have such stringent game laws
that it is practically impossible to
purchase quail even for propagatiing
purposes in the United States and
dealers have sought quail elsewhere,
especially in northwestern Mexico

where quail occur in abundance, but
Mexican quail on arrival at destina
tion are frequently found infected
with quail disease. So fatal is this
disease that when it once appears
most of the birds which are expored
to it die within a few days. In one
shipment of 196 quail which recently
reached New York only three birds
survived the voyage, and in another
of about 160 birds, more than two
thirds of the number died shortly af
ter arrival More than one-third of
all the Mexican quail imported last
year died witfhin a few months. To
guard against spread of quail disease
live quail purchased for propagation
should be kept under observation for
\two or three weeks and should not be
liberated if infected with disease. The
Department desires to ascertain the
result of experiments which have
been made in importing quail this
year and will be glad to receive in
formation as to the condition of the
birds and as to how many have died
it any locality where the quail have
been introduced.
Before next season the Department
will hold a public hearing in Wash
ington, D. C-, for the purpose of de
termining whether or not further per
mits for importation of quail from
Mexico will be issued, at -which var
ious questions connected with the
importation of quail will be carefully
considered. Ample notice of this
hearing will be given later in order
that those who are interested may ar
,r<;nge to be present or to submit writ
ten statements.
“Senile” Decay
Ruin Cathedral
LONDON, Feb. 4. —Again the atten
tion has been called to the danger of
St. Paul’s Cathedrial collapsing
through “scenile decay" and an appeal
for funds is made by the Dean to
hasten the repairs.
.Two years ago the sum of $350,000
was asked by the cathedrial preser
vation board, and of this only about
$150,000 has been so far subscribed.
It was then stated by the examining
engineers that the original architect,
the great Wren, had been very spar
ing in his use of materials. The con
stant jarring of the building by mo
torbus and other heavy traffic had of
course not been anticipated.
The vast and imperfectly distribut
ed weight of the dome is the seat of
the trouble, and the gradual pressure
of the weight is accelerated by the
rusting of iron and internal degen
crracy. Only the loyalty of the mater
ials to each other, says one authority,
has kept the mass together. Repairs
done at an earlier period are found to
entirely inadequate, and new but
tresses and supports must be con
structed as soon as the money can
be found.

Yap Island
Is Land For
Hard Money
LONDON, Feb. 4—Stone money,
ranging in size from grindstones
up to cartwheels, is the customary
currency in the Island of Yap, ac
cording to the annual bullion report
ot one of London’s largest financial
i firms. Yap belongs to the Caroline
Islands in the Pacific between Hawa i
and the Philippines. It is now a
British possesion, being captured ear
ly in the war from Germany, w'ho ob
tained it by purchase from Spain in
1898.
The stone currency of Yap is made
of limestone, which must be of fine
white grain. A hole is cut in the
center to allow a stick to be passed
through, as the larger stones are
rolled up to the hut of the owner.
Some of the stones have a diameter
up to twelve feet, with the result that
'a number of men are required to ef
fect a payment.
In case the transfer of the money
is considered too great a job the new
owner simply puts his own mark on
it and leaves it outside the old own
er’s hut. A case is recorded where
an .exceptionally fine stone, while
being moved at sea, fell off the raft
and was lost. But the owner con
tinued to retain its potent value in
the eyes of his fellow citizens, anl
was given the same credit as if the
stone stood safely before his hut.

"If the people of this town only
knew what Tanlac had done for me you
would sell a thousand bottles tomor

known employe of the Southern Rail
way, who lives at 126 East Ninth street,
Anniston, Ala. Mr. Stringfellow is well
known in railway circles and is on the
Atlanta and Birmingham division. His
many friends will be glad to hear of
his complete restoration to health.
“I suffered from stomach trouble and
indigestion for four years,” continued
Mi. Stringfellow-, "anl got so I couldn’t
cat hardly anything. I fell off until
I only weighed 119 pounds and finally
got so weak and run-down I was on
the point of having to resign my posi
tion. To tell you the truth I just felt
like life was not worth living because
I just seemed to be getting worse all
the time and nothing seemed to do me
any good.
“I would have awful pains in my
back and kidneys and could hardly
sleep. Two hours each night would
be about all the sleep I would get. Most
alw'ays after eating I would have gas
on my stomach and my heart woull
palpitate. I would get w r eak in my
limbs and have dizzy spells and would
have spots in front of my eyes.
‘‘About a month ago I began read
ing about Tanlac and heard the rail
road men talking about It. Several
of my friends had taken the medicine
and said it was a fine thing for stom
ach trouble, so I decided to give it a
trial. The first bottle helped me so
much I kept on taking it and have just
finished my fifth bottle. When I weigh
ed the other day I kicked the beam at
1.41 pounds ,and W’as so surprised I
turned around to see If some one was
not standing on the scales. Yes, sir,
that’s a fact. I had actually gained 22
pounds and feel like a well man again
