Interesting Sport Letter
Gatheied From All Spheres
NEW CORK, Feb. 15. —In the m’det | v
of ths great European war the idea of; 1:
international sport and competition : t
will not down. The advocates of these c
games are constantly advancing plans x
for such meetings, to take place dur- i
iug hostilities or immediately follow- 1
ing the declaration of peace. It is re- r
peatedly pointed out that such friendly 1
engagements in the realms of sport a
will either help in bringing about i
peace or act as a balm for the bitter- I
ness engendered by the conflict. a
An example of these frequent es- a
forts is shown in plans for an inter- r
national sport meeting after the war to I
be held in Holland the land of interna- t
ticnal meetings. This interesting idea i
is put forward in one of the leading
Dutch newspapers by a sport enthus
iast. The writer argues that when
peace comes economic necessity will 1
soon draw the present belligerents to- 1
getter again and prepare the way for 1
international sport, which will in its ,
turn react favorably on the relations ’ 1
of those now engaged in so bitter a '
struggle with gun and bayonet.
Such international sport meetings,
however, he points out, call for diplo
matic and caneful preperation. One
eannot, for instance, expect to see a
football match Germany versus Brit
ain in Berlin in the first post-war seas
on. Hence Holland’s opportunity to
perform a delicate task, with the sup
port of America and other neutrals, by
making that country a center of con
tact. The aim of such an international
meeting would naturally have to be
delicately masked, but once represen
tatives of the present belligerents had
met on a Dutch playing field the pro
cess would deevlop of itself very quick
ly. leading to a full restoration of the
valuable international sport.

whether the warring nations will

out that football is still being played I
week by week in Britain, that a Bielg- ■

match took place three weeks ago at 1 1

No Trophy Cups.
Reports from those close to auto
racing authorities are to the effect that
the Vanderbilt Cup and Grand Prize;
trophy races will not be allotted for
speedway competition during 1916. It
. is said that the members of the Motor
Cups Holding Corporation are strong
ly opposed to shifting these automo
bile race ciassies from reads to track
courses. Unless there is a change in
the deeds of gift it appears as though
these two best known of American
auto racing trophies will go uncom
peted for during the present year.
East to Enter Polo.
Several eastern polo teams are ex
pected to enter the Coronado Country
Club tournament at Corando, Cal., next
month. The tournament, which runs
from March 1 to 20, will include sev
eral trophies such as the California
Challenge, Pacific Coast Junior Cham
pionship, Pacific Coast All-American
and other valuable prizes some of
which have been in competition almost
3 decade. Among the eastern experts
who have sent strings of ponies to the
- far coast for early polo play are Mal
colm Stevenson, C. Perry Beadleston.

The Better
The Day The
Worse Deed
j ATLANTA, Ga„ Feb. 15.—The better
jibe day the worse the deed, provided
j it is a bad deed to begin with, is the
new maxim laid down by the Atlanta
’ police court. S. O. Adams, who was
arrested for cursing on the streets
Sunday, to the scandalization of num
erous good church ladies, drew a fine
of SIOO. The fine for cursing on the
other days of the week usually runs
anywhere from: $5 to $25.
Adams blames his troubles on the
demon rum. He claimed that he had
drunk some whiskey which was doped,
during the present session.
