NEW SERVICE 81
THHELEME
The new Two-Number long distance
telephone service, which was recentiy
authorized by the state railroad com
mission was inaugurated April Ist.
This service is to be tried as an
experiment for a period of one year to
certain points within a radius of fifty
miles of Atlanta, Savannah, Macon,
Columbus and Augusta. Officials of the
Bell system believe the new method
with its reduced rates will prove pop
ular with the public. In the event it is
a success, it will be extended to include
other points throughout the south.
The saving of operators’ time and
of the use of circuits in passing calls
is an important element in long dis
tance operating. Under the new
method you do not call long distance
when making a Two-Number call. You
give the name of the town and the
number of the distant phone to the local
operator who answers your signal.
The charges for the service begin if
the called telephone answers, and the
operator does not undertake to get r.
particular party. Calls can be made in
the usual way by calling long dis
tance.
Telephone officials are hoping that
local merchants will use the ne> 1 '
method and give it a thorough test on
their calls to Atlanta.
College Assists In Getting
Eggs to Best Market
W. S. Dilts, Instructor Department Os
Poultry, Georgia State Col
lege Os Agriculture.
“Egg routes” are being established
at various places in Georgia in con
nection with cream routes, for the
purpose of assembling eggs at given
shipping points. At these centers
proper attention to grading and pack
ing can be given so that the eggs can
be sent off to the best-paying market.
Recent experiments with high-clas*
Georgia eggs sent in 30 dozen packs
to the city of New York, revealed that
after express and commission has
been deducted, the net return to the
shipper was very much greater than
could be obtained in local markets.
While it is n<4 expected that the or
dinary run of eggs obtained on an
"egg route” will bring as much as this
particularly fine lot, yet it is quite
certain that there will be no trouble
to net at least five cents more on the
dozen than can be found on local mar
kets in Georgia.
The egg routes have been associat
-1 ed with the cream routes, one person
finding it easy enough to collect both,
thus reducing the expense of collec
tion. It costs from 1% to 2 cents per
dozen to collect, sort and pack for
shipment the eggs that are being re
ceived from these routes. Collections
are being made from two to three
times a week, thus permitting eggs to
go fresher to market than country
eggs usually do.
, Selecting Cotton
Resistant to Boil Rot
J Loy E. Rast, in Charge of Cotton In
dustry, Georgia State College
Os Agriculture.
| Fifteen varieties of cotton have
> been tested for two years at the Col
| lege of Agriculture to determine their
> resistance to anthracnose or boll rot.
| The results of two years have been
> obtained for only eight varieties. The
t order in which they stand as to re-
I sistance of anthracnose is as follows:
• College No. 1, Sunbeam No. 60, Cooks,
I Modella, Sunbeam No. 80 Half and
Half, Toole, Simpkins. Among those
showing up well under the one year’s
test are Lewis, Dixie and Cleveland.
In testing these varieties for resist
ance, it was made quite certain that
all had an opportunity of being infect
ed. A variety known to be infect
ed and very poor in resistance was
planted in alternate rows with the
varieties mentioned. They were thus
subject to the severest test that could
occur under field conditions. That
the disease was prevalent and very
active is shown by the total destruc
tion of one variety that is very sus
ceptible, during the last year. Col
lege No. 1 showed only 2.9 per cent
of diseased bolls, Sunbeam 4.6 per
centage of diseased bolls, Cooks 5.7,
Modella 6.3, Sunbeam 80 6.6, Toole
and Simpkins 6.5, Half and Half a
total loss for the year 1915.

Black-Haired
Men All Right
ATLANTA, Ga., April 24.—Why does
Geraldine Farrar, the famous soprano,
v ho is now- Mrs. Lou-Tellegen, wife of
the motion picture actor, prefer a
black-haired man to a blond?
Shortly after Miss Farrar’s recent
marriage to Lou-Tellegen, it was an
nounced that se had died his hair the
solor of the raven’s wing, because she
preferred that kind of a thatch.
And now her blond-haired gentle
men friends in Atlanta are wondering
what’s w-rong with the hair God gave
them, and are trying to persuade Miss
Farrar to tell them why a black-haired
man is more attractive than one with
locks of gold.
They want to know what peculiar
E'asculine quality, if any, attaches to
the possession of raven hair, and why
this quality ,if any there be, is so pleas
ing to a woman.
Miss Farrar is letting ’em rave ana
tear their blond curls and isn’t telling
them a thing.
Her return to Atlanta with the
Metropolitan for the week of grand
opera which opens tonight has demon
strated once more the great popularity
of her voice and personality among At
lanta opera lovers. She is receiving
many social attentions and “Tosca”
and “Madame Butterfly,” the operas .n
which she sings, will be among the
largest of the week in attendance.
Caruso opens the week tonight in
the role of Samson in “Samson and
> eDlilah.”

HOW SHE FOUND HEALTH.
Stamford, Conn.—‘‘l am a nurse

help me. By chance I heard of Vinol,j
and after taking the first bottle I no-1

I made me well and strong, it gave;

Forbes, Stamford, Conn.
The reason Vinol is so sQccessful
'in overcoming such conditions is be-1
cause it is a constitutional remedy
and goes to the seat of the trouble.
It is the greatest strength creator we
i know—due to the extractive medici

Italian Funny
And Breaks Up
The Courts
ATLANTA, Ga., April 24—The e-f
forts of Charles Peppino, an Italian
delicatessen dealer, to convince a judge
and jury in Atlanta that he wouldn’t
think of selling sausage that makes
people sick were so vociferous and so
ludicrous that the bailiffs had to lock
the courtroom doors to keep out the
spectators.
Peppino knows a few words of Eng
lish, but when he launched his story he
very promptly forgot them and began
to harangn" the court in his native
tongue. T'le judge had to threaten- to
send him to jail for contempt of court
before lie could stop Peppino’s oratory,
and then an interpreter was called to
put the muffler tn him.
