GERMANS PLIN U. BOAT
SERVICE FOB CARRYING MAILS
The German people have surprised
the world. They have demonstrated
their ability as fighters on both land
and sea, and no one any longer ques
tions their prowess or ingenuity, in
equipping big guns and acquiring fight
ing exquipment, high explosives and
the like.
The latest exploit under considera-
I tion by the Germans, if carried out,
I will without doubt prove One of the
most daring and unique yet disclosed.
The New York Evening Mail de
clares it has been learned from a relia
ble supree that a regular trans-Atlantic
submarine service will be started be
tween New York city and Hamburg and
that the first submarine liner is sched
uled to arrive on American shores on
or about July 1. “She will be armed
for defense only; she will carry the
German mails, parcel post, express
matter and, perhaps, a few passen
gers,” says the New York newspaper.
The information was learned, it is
seid, from a shipping man who arrived
' a few days ago from Hamburg. The
new submarine built for merchant ser
vice will be able to make the trip in
ten days, it is declared.
“By Aug. 8, Germany expects to have
five of these super-submarines working
on regular schedule,’’ the story contin
ues. “They will leave Hamburg and go
north of Scotland or through the chan
nel, as conditions warrant. It is
planned to enter New York byway of
Long Island sound, taking advantage
. of the three-mile limit.’’
Such a move on the part of Germany,
I it is said, will result in an immediate
strengthening of the British and Eng
| Bsh patrols in Atlantic waters, and the
; crowding of patrol boats up to the very
’.limit of high seas waters.
