ATLANTA, Ga„ June 16.—What use
Atlanta has for a seismograph nobody
seems to know, but Atlanta is going to
have one, nevertheless.
A seismograph, as everyone knows,
is an instrument that records the
tremors of earthquakes. It is so del
icate an instrument that slight treqaors
hundreds of miles away are faithfully
recorded. Even disturbances on the
ocean floor far out to sea, which are
not sufficient to affect the tides and
ocean currents, are set down by the
seismograph.
Not being a Naples or Pompeii, and
having no Vesuvius right next door to
start a Atlanta’s claims
to fame have never included such a
thing as an earthquake, and hence At
lantians are at a loss to understand
why the city needs seismograph.
But nevertheless, as stated above,
she's going to have one. The Chamber
• of Commerce has taken the matter up
I with U. S, Senator Hoke Smith and
I the senator has secured the promise of
the department of agriculture that a
seismograph will be supplied.
