♦ THE HOUSE BY THE SIDE OF ♦
p ♦ THE SEA. ♦
(“He was a friend of a man, and
lived in a house by the side of the
road.”—Homer.)
There are hermit souls that live with
drawn
In the peace of self-content;
There are souls like stars, that dwell
apart
In a fellowless firmament;
There are pioneer souls that blaze
their paths
Where highways never ran;
But let me live by the side of the road,
And be a friend to man.
Let me live in a house by the side of
the road,
Where the race of men go by—
The men who are good and the men
who are bad,
As good and as bad as I.
I would not sit in the scorner's seat,
Or hurl the cynic’s ban;
Let me live in a house by the side of
a road,
And be a friend to man.
I see from my house by the side of
the road—
By the side of the highway of life—
The men who press with the ardor of
hope,
The men who are faint with strife.
But I turn not away from their smiles
nor their tears—
Both parts of an infinite plan;
Let me live in my house by the side
of the road,
And be a friend to man. •
Let me live in my house by the side
of the road,
Where the race of men go by—
They are good, they are bad, they are
weak; they are strong;
Wise, foolish—so am I.
Then why should I sit in the scorner’s
seat,
Or hurl the cynic’s ban?
Let me live in a house by the side]
of the road,
And be a friend of man.

FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE
SEW AMD UNIQUE CLUB.
One of the most novel and unique
clubs ever organized in Americus was
Conned Saturday by ten members of
the younger set on the Southside. The
club, the Friendship Circle, promises
to be one of the most popular and
prominent of the many social organi
sations of the city. The members of
the club formerly composed the Girls’
Scout club, which has disbanded, ow
ing to the advent of hot weather.
One of the most unique ideas of
the club is the nature of the enter
tainments to be given. Picnics, par
ties and house-parties will be the prin
cipal diversions of the girls, and the
manner of escort has been changed
materially, for the girls eay this is
Leap Year, therefore they are privii-

one of their parties the girls check
the boys. The young men for the
first time in their careers will taste
the bitter draught of the “lemon.”
Among the girls of the younger set
members of the latest club are Misses
Mary Belle Greece, Catherine Hamil
ton, Nellie Worthy, Marguerite Ever
ett, Frances Loving, Isabel Wheatley,
Pauline Broadhurst, Eugenia Collins,
Mary Walker and Margaret Wheatley.
Meetings will be held every week at
the home of one of the members and
numerous outings have been planned
by the young ladies “in honor” of the
boys of their favored crowd. This
latest club should prove quite an ad
dition to Americus and the social
world of the city.

THE AMERICUS TIMES-RECORDER.
irg the time the Scout club has been
in existence, it has added much to so
cial life in Americus, and that it will
' probably disband will be regretted by
those who have taken an interest in
the affairs of this club. It was origin
ally planned by seven girls of the
younger set, but gradually increased
its membership, until twelve members
of the younger set composed the mem
bership. During the winter months
the club members took long hikes, but
the weather, they judge, makes these
hikes inconvenient, and a club of jusi
as much interest socially, but of less
exertion physically, is slated to dis
place the Girls’ Scout club.
The members of the club are Misses
Mary Alice Lingo, Naomi Wright, Or
lean Ansley, Mary Rose Brown, Mary
Sue Chambliss, Margery Brown, Nel
lie Worthy, Margaret Wheatley, Paul
ine Broadhurst, Geraldine Payne.
Weekly meetings were held through
out the winter and many weeks dur
ing the summer at the homes of its
members.
