GILBERT WILL RUN
WITHOUT OPPONENT
ATLANTA, Ga., Oct. 2.—The general
impression now prevails in local pol
itical circles that Judge Price Gilbert
v ill not be opposed for election to the
v.nexpired term of the late Judge Jos
eph Henry Lumpkin ,of the state su
preme court.
The action of the democratic state
con vent'cii in declining to nominate a
party < andidate for the general elec
tion seems to have been pretty gener
ally accepted as expressing the will of
the party, and leaders of all political
factions are satisfied, apparently, to
let Judge Gilbert go into the general
election without opposition.
Under the law, Governor Harris
could not name a successor to serve
longer than the next general election,
arc it so happened that Judge Lump
kin's death came too late for any can
didate for the remainder of the unex
pired term to be voted on in the demo
cratic primary. The convention could
have made a convention nomination,
but by keeping hands off in the mat-

ODUTOTFUL CHARACTER
SUBJECT OF CLEAN IIP
ATLANTA, Ga., Oct. 2.—A clean-up
campaign of boarding houses in the
semi-central district has been inaugu
rated by the Atlanta police for the pur
pose of weeding out such establish
ments as may be of doubtful charac
ter.
Shortly after the closing of Atlanta's
“red light” district, an ordinance was
passed by council requiring all hotels,
boarding houses, lodging houses, etc.,
to obtain licenses, the purpose being
not so much to raise money from this
form of taxation, but to keep a record
oi the proprietors of such establish
ments and their location.
A dozen women operating so-called
boarding houses on the rim of the busi
ness section have been arrested on
charges of operating without licenses,
and the police are closely investigating
a number of other places.
ter. the convention virtually placed
the stamp of its approval on Judge
Gilbert.

WANT ME FDR THE
JUDGESHIP FOB CIRCUIT
CORDELE, Ga., Oct. 2. The mem
ers of the bar of Fitzgerald are getting
after the judgeship of the Cordele cir
cuit shortly to be made vacant by the
resignation of Judge Walter F. George,
one of the nominees of the state con
vention for the new places on the court
of appeals bench. Plans are being laid
in Fitzgerald to support A. J. McDon
ald, one of the strongest members of
the bar of that city. Eldridge Cutts is
also mentioned for the place.
Members of the Cordele bar are also
laying plans to go after the place and
whether it be by appointment, or by
election, there will be three members
of the local bar who will probably ask
for the place as successor to Judge
George. These are D. A. R. Crum, E.
F. Strozier and M. M. Eakes.
If Judge George resigns thirty days
before the November election, those
working for the place will have to get
on the hustings and ask the people
about it. If the resignation comes too
late, then it will be a matter for Gov
ernor Harris.

Fishing With a Worm.
To make the most of dull hours, to
make the best of dull people, to like a
poor jest better than none, to wear the
threadbare coat like a gentleman, to
be outvoted with a smile, to hitch
your wagon to the old horse if no star
is handy—this is the wholesome philos
ophy taught by fishing with a worm.—

Had Lost His Words.
Edward had something Important to
say one day, and in his eagerness to
talk had hard work to keep from in

finished speaking, his mother asked
Edward what he had to say, but the
little fellow’s face suddenly fell, hav
ing forgotten what It was, and he ex
claimed, in a tone of great dejection:
"O, mamma, I lost ev words.”

FACULTY OF EMORY INCREASED
BY ADDING TWO
EMORY UNIVERSITY, Oxford, Ga.J
Oct. 2. —The faculty of Emory college,
the school of liberal arts of Emory uni
versity, has always been noted for
scholarship, zeal and industry. This
worthy faculty has been strengthened
by the addition of two well-equipped
men in the departments of history and
English. Dr. Theodore Henley Jack
relieves Dr. Edgar H. Johnson of the
•*
work in history; Dr. Johnson continues
as professor of economics and polit
ical science, in addition to his duties
as dean of the college. Dr. James Hin- j
ton has been added to the faculty of
the department of English.
Dog Not Troubled.
My little brother has a Newfound
land dog of which he is very fond, and
never allows anybody to scold or
abuse. The new cook could not talk
English, and one day he heard her
scolding his dog (in German) for chew
ing on the rug. He came to me laugh
ing and said: “Gretchen is scolding
Prince, but he don’t care; he just sits
there and wags his tail, because he
can’t understand German.” —Chicago
Tribune.
Labor Saved.
If mother has several small boys
this plan is a good time saver. When
making trousers insert loops of round
white cord such as is used in corsets,
instead of working buttonholes in
waistbands, and leave the facing wide
enough to turn back; insert the loops
and stitch down with the extra width.
This serves for buttonholes and takes
much less time.
What She Wanted.
”Ma wants a package of dye and she
wants a fashionable color,” said the
little girl of a druggist. “A fashion
able color!” echoed the pharmacist.
“What does she want it for, eggs or
clothes,” “Well,” replied the girl, "the
doctor says ma has stomach trouble
and ought to diet. And ma says if she
has to dye it she might as well dye it
a fashionable color.”
Language of Treaties.
The archive copy of treaties is al
ways in each of the languages of all
the signatory powers, unless one lan
guage may be agreed upon as the com
mon language. Printed copies of
treaties are generally in the language
of the countries doing the printing.
French is generally accepted as the
language of diplomacy, but it is not,
officially an "international language.”
