DEMOCSffIKNOWN
WASHINGTON, D. C„ May 30.—The
newest thing under the sun is the
democracy of Khiva, announced from
Petrograd. Concerning this dependency
of Russia tucked away in Cetral Asia,
far from the beaten path of travel and
the channels of news. the National
Geographic society issues the foliow
ir.g war geography bulletin:
"When popular clamor of the Khi
vites a few days ago resulted in the
Khan, of that country granting a con
stitution to his people one of the few
remaining autocracies passed from the
face of the earth.
“Khiva’s ‘size is not commensurate
with its picturesqueness. It is scarce
ly larger than the State of West Vir
ginia, with about two-thirds as many
inhabitants. More than three fourths
of the land consists of semi-arid step
pes, while the remaining quarter is a
fertile oasis where fruits grow in
abundance, and cotton, wheat, barley,
oats, flax, hemp and vegetables are eas
ily cultivated, especially when the land
is irrigated by canals fed from the wa
ters of the Amu (Oxus) River.
“The nomads of the steppes, who
constitute fully half the population of
the khanate, breed sheep, horses, and
camels.
The capital of the country is Khiva,
a walled city of 6,000 people. It is not
the commercial center of the khanate
however, for its three hundred shops
are as a rule, only open on market
days, Mondays and Thursdays. The
chief mart of the country is Yani-Urg
ench. 20 miles northeast of Khiva.
“T ■ Khivites living in the town and
villages are chiefly engaged in the man
ufacture of silk. The whole oasis -is
planted in white mulberries and almost
every hut is a minature silk factory,
where the whole process of spinning,
dyeing, and weaving is carried on by
hand in the most primitive fashion im
aginable.
“East of Khiva is the Turkish state
of Bokhara, while far to the west are
the waters of the Caspian. A thin tongue
o' - land of the khnate extends to the
north until it touches the southern wa
ters o fthe Aral Sea. Owing to its in
land, desert-surrounded situation the
crimate is subject to radical extremes
of heat and cold, although it is between
the same parallels of latitude as New
York and Pennsylvania.
In ancient and early medieval times
Khiva was a part of the kingdoms of
Bactria, Parthia and Persia in turn.
The great Genghis Khan overran it in
the year 1221 and 150 years later it
fell beneath the ruthless sword of that
most pitiless of Tartar potentates, Tam
erlane. As early as the seventeenth
century the Cossacks had discovered
the wealth of the province and in 1717
Peter the Great, of Russia, made an un
successful effort to annex it to his rap
idly growing dominions. A century
and a quarter later Tsar Nicholas I al
s > attempted to conquer it, but with no
greater success. Finally ,in 1873 three
Russian columns were set in motion
with the design of squeezing the coun
try into submission. One column
marched to the southeast from Oren
burg. another eastward from the Cas
pian and a third due west from Tash
kent. In May of that year Khiva cap
itulated and the khan agreed to pay a
war indemnity of $11,000,000, a debt
which is still being liquidated in annual
installments.
“When the country acknowledged the
overlordship of Russia there were 30,
000 Persians in the realm and of this
number 27,000 were held in slavery.
The conquerors ordered the release of
all thse unhappy creatures.”

THOMPSON SCHOOL
CLOSES FOO TERM
The closing exercises of Thompson
School, located at Croxton’s Cross

EMORY FRAZIER EXHIBITED
PRIZE HEAD OF LETTUCE TODAY
Emory Frazier, an industrious colored
man who lives at 301 Winn street, in
the suburbs of Americus, exhibited in
the Times-Recorder office Tuesday, the
largest head of lettuce, it is believed,
ever grown in this county. The vegeta
ble measured eighteen iaches in cir
cumference, and weighed exactly 18
'ounces, the leaves all being well headed,
tender and of succulent quality.. Fra
zier, who cultivates half an acre of
land owned by one of his more pros
perous colored neighbors, states he
has many similar heads of lettuce in
his “patch,” in addition to a good crop
of other vegetables, and that he and his
family will not be compelled to buy
any food during the vegetable season.
In addition he peddles a few vegetables
daily, and realizes a goodly revenue
from his labors in this manner.

GEORGIA BANKERS
AID LIBERTY LDAN
ATLANTA. Ga„ May 30.—Plans have
'been made by the Liberty Loan Com
mittee of this Federal Reserve District
for opening Liberty Loan booths adjac
ent to each registration booth through
out the district, which will be set up
tn June 5 for registration under the
Selective Conscription Act.
The banks in every county in the dis
trict will be asked to take in hand the
matter of opening the Liberty Loan
booths, whose object will be to attract
public attention to, and secure sub
scriptions for, the Liberty Bonds. This
will mean the establishment perhaps of
between three or four thousand booths
cr more in the various cities of the re
serve district. Each booth will be in
charge of some bank or bank employee
and the occasion upon which the young
men of the country register for ser
vice under the flag will be made one
upon which those who are not called
upon to register shall have their atten
tion called to the method by which
they can best help.
Governor H. Y. McCord of the Fed
eral Reserve Bank here announces a
subscription of one million dollars re
ceived this week from a Georgia cor
poration, the name of which is with
held. This is one of the largest purch
ases of Liberty Loan Bonds yet made
in the district. The Southern Bell Tel
ephone Company purchase of five mil
lion dollars is to be divided among the
various districts in which it operates.
For the first time in its history the
New York Stock Exchange has entered
into an advertising campaign. It has
begun to place advertisements in news
papers throughout the United States
urging the purchase of Liberty Bonds.
The exchange will meet the entire ex
penses of the campaign.
The Atlanta committee has called ou
people throughout the district to send
in suggestions for a slogan to be used
in connection iwth the bond sale. These
suggestions should be sent to the dis
trict committee. Hurt Building, Atlanta,
Ga., and a prize of $lO is to be award
ed to the person furnishing the most
satisfactory suggestion.
Printed matter has been prepared to
be used in pay envelopes by all employ
ers of labor; slips have been printed to
be used in bank pass books and circul
ars which retail merchants may ywrap
with their bundles. In addition to this,
the committee has moving picture
slides ready for any theatres in the
district who are willing to use them.
Applications for these slides or for
ai.y of the printed matter should be
made to St Elmo Massengale, Chair,
man. Publicity Committee, Hurt Build
ing, Atlanta, Ga. Anyone desiring in
formation of any sort about the sale of
the bonds will be promptly supplied
with it upon application to W. C.
Wardlaw. Hurt Building. Atlanta. Ga.
Reports are coming from all over
the district of reorganization of com
cattees and sub-commfttees and these
indicate enthusiastic effort in almost
every section.
The Atlanta Lodge of Elks held a
meeting Tuesday and decided to begin
at once a campaign whose purpose
should be to see that every member of
the organization buys a bond. A com
mittee was appointed to work in co
operation with the Liberty Loan Com
mittee and while its efforts will be
confined largely to the large member
ship. it offers assistance in other’direc
tions in which it may be desired.
