BRAVES GREAT PITCHER
MAY YET MAKE AN EFFORT
TO SUCCESSFUL COME BACK
NEW YORK, June I.—Dispatches
from California bring word that Bill
James, with a growth cut off his fling
ing arm, will yet' make an effort to
come back. The wondrous worker,
whose tremendous heaving was mainly
responsible for the dash to a world’s
championship by the Braves, it is de
clared, may be on the road to a suc
cessful comeback.
A rejuvenation of James would give
the Braves considerably more of a look
in on things than they possess right
new. When this master of the hurling
art was in his best fettle there never
was a pitcher who was better. James
was the acme of that angle of base
ball. He had everything—speed, a
curve ball, the head that goes with it,
and the tremendous bulk needed to
carry him through the hardest work.
James’ first year as a professional
baseball hurler marked him as a play
er of parts. He won twenty-nine
games and was defeated is only sever,
while pitching for Seattle in the
Northwestern league. That was en
ough for Boston. He was promptly
grabbed off. His first year he won
six and lost ten, but in 1914, when he
helped the Braves during their sensa
tional spurt, the Boston wonder won
twenty-six and lost only seven
That brief period in the spotlight of
fans ended big Bill’s career unless the
operation brings back his power. In
1915 his name was opposite six vic
tories and four defeats. Last year his
name didn’t’even connect with the
records.
BRITISH LION HAS PUT HIS
FOOT DOWN ON DANCING
LONDON, June I.—Banished from
the Br-.ish Isles by the frown of pop
v.lar disapproval, the Goddess Terpsi
chore was observed sadly winging her
way westward, early today.
The British Lion has put his paw
down on dancing and the light fantas
tic will be tripped no more in these
parts until the last Hun hesitation has
turned into a headlong flight.
Giro’s is out of bounds. The Savoy
ball-room chandeliers are gathering
cobwebs. The Waldorf tea-rooms are
new sometimes used for tea. Private
dances are, if possible, more taboo
than public affairs.
The recent wrath aroused by Lord
and Lady Curzon, who entertained a
dozen guests at an informal dance in
their home, has put the fear of the
malcontents who write letters to the
editors in the hearts of any who would
dance in the future. London was
alive with posters the day after Lord
Curzon’s affair, screaming to the pub
lic in foot-high letters that “Curzon
Dances While England Burns," “Twen
tieth Century Nero,” etc.
There is just one institution in Lon .
don that dares to brave the storm of
wrath which those who aren’t able to
dance shower on those who can and
do. The American Women’s Club held
a series of three Tea Dances for the
American girls and young men in
London in April.
ATLANTA MEDICAL MEN
PLANNING TO GO TO FRONT
ATLANTA, Ga„ June I.—Following
the announcement that the Allies are
terribly in need of medical aid and
that trained physicians and surgeons
cannoe be had in sufficient numbers
more than a dozen of Atlanta’s best
known medical men are planning to
give up their practice and go as quick
ly as possible to the front.
Dr. Walpole Brew’er ,who has seen
service in Russian field and base hos
pitals, and later in Austrian hospitals
while a prisoner of war, is going to
France. He and Dr. Leo P. Daly ars
both organizing ambulance corps,
while Dr. Frank Adkins, formerly med
ical director of the Atlanta public
schools, has secured a commission
and will shortly go to the front.
It is stated that the American med
ical men going abroad will be given
their choice of working in the field
hospitals or far behind the lines.

UNIQUE PROPOSAL FOR PEACE
FROM FITZGEBFALD PAPER
ATLANTA, Ga.. June I.—Widespread
attention has been attracted by the
unique proposal advanced by the
Fitzgerald (Ga.) Leader-Enterprise
for the governments of the United
States, Great Britain and France to
offer the people of Germany and Aus
tria-Hungary an immediate peace with
out indemnities on condition that
they immediately overthrow their
monarchs and establish democratic
government.
The Leader-Enterprise suggests that
this offer be spread broadcast among
the soldiers and civilians of the Cen
tral Powers by means of aeroplanes,
i'l the same manner that President
Wilson’s famous war address to con
gress was translated into German and
dropped behind their lines by Allied
aviators, and which enterprise is re
ported to have resulted almost im
mediately in the voluntary surrender
ot large numbers of German soldiers
who walked across No Man’s iJind
with their hands up, holding the Pres
ident's declaration that the United ,
States is making war on the German
government and not on the German
people.
PEACH CROP TO BE HANDLED
PROMPTLY THIS SEASON
ATLANTA. Ga.. June I.—There will
be no shortage of refrigerator cars to
handle the movement of Georgia
peaches to market this season, ac
cording to information received by
the Georgia Fruit Exchange, which has
il< headquarters in Atlanta, from the.
trunk line railroads both in this ter
ritory and in the east.
If any odds, the transportation ser
vice this year will be better than last,
in the belief of B. J. Christman, gen
eral manager of the exchange, who
has gone into the matter thoroughly
with the traffic officials of the rail
roads. The only thing that might in
terfere would be a movement of large
bodies of troops before the peach crop
' starts to market, and this is not ex
pected.
ITALY’S WAR MISSION TO BE
IN ATLANTA NEXT TUESDAY
ATLANA, Ga., June I.—ltaly’s war
mission headed by the Prince Undine
will arrive in Atlanta on Tuesday of
next week and will be elaborately en
tertained by the city government and
the civic bodies and social clubs. The
mission is traveling out of Washing
ton on a special train provided by
the government, and is touring the
south at the instance of its members,
who are especially anxious to visit
this section. While Atlanta was anx
ious to have the honor of a visit by
the British and French war missions
the visit of the Italian mission will be
made the occasion for a great patriot
ic demonstration.
