Home Guards at Atlanta.
ATLANTA. Ga., July 11. —Two hun
dred young Atlantians who drill three
times a week in an unofficial prepara
tion for a possible call to the colors
in the future are making such prog
ress that their drillmaster made bold
to take them out on a hike to teach
them patrol and guard duty.
One of the duties of a sentry on
guard, as explained to the men, is to
answer all reasonable questions put
to him, just as a policeman would. If
there is any special danger, or if any
thing occurs on his beat which he can
not handle, he is supposed to yell for
the corporal of the guard, who brings
up reinforcements.
"Now, Mr. Jones," inquired the cap
tain of the company, “suppose you were
on sentinel duty and a young lady
drove up in an automobile and stopped
to ask you a question, what would yo
do?”
”1 would call the corporal of the
guard,” responded Jones without a
moment's hesitation.

HERE’S HOW TO KEEP
COOL THESE HOT DAYS
If, on these hot midsummer days,
you should encounter a friend striding
absent-minded along the street with
one finger planted firmly against the
left nostril and his chest heaving up
and down in deep and regular inhala
tions, do not stare at him in startled
surprise and exclaim sorrowfully,
“Poor Jones! The heat’s got him!”
On the contrary, you should envy
J( nes. He is cool; you are not accord
ing to Prof. Bryan Harrison, newspaper
man and noted psychologist of St.
Louis, formerly of Atlanta.
Mr. Harrison was delivering a lec
ture before the Atlanta Psychological
center Sunday afternoon at the city
hall, when he was distracted by the
number of palm leaf fans waved by his
auditors. The sight diverted him from
Ji is main topic long enough to say:
“You people who are fanning so vig
orously would not be hot if you would
try a simple little remedy—place the
forefinger firmly against the side of
the left nostril and inhale and exhale
deeply seven times. You will find it
wonderfully cooling.”
As a result of his words a score or
more Atlantians spent the evening Sun
day with their fingers against their
noses, wheezing like grampuses and
counting seven times seven.
Try it yourself.--Atlanta Journal.
