ATLANTA WANTS
ANOTHER CAMP
i
ATLANTA, Ga„ Feb, 4.—A special,
meeting of the directors of the Atlanta
Chamber of Commerce and the public
Safety committee was called this
morning for the purpose of waging a
fight to have another big cantonemnt'
located at Atlanta. President W. H.
White, Jr., of the Chamber of Com-,
merce, issued the call.
This cantonment is for the purpose
of training officers and men for the
ordnance depatrment, and would ac
commodate approximately 15,000 men.
It has been generally accepted that
this camp would go to Jacksonville,
but the war department is not satisfied,
i< is learned here, with the whisky sit
uation in the Florida city. That city
is operating under the retail package
svstem and the government is desirous

In anticipation, therefore, of the
Florida city losing this new camp, a
determined effort will put forth this
week in the interest of Atlanta.
The greatest drawback to Aalanta’s
chances now, it appears from advices
from Washington, is the belief in
Washington that Atlanta's railroad
yards are already taxed with military
traffic.
VICE STILL RAMPANT
IN ATLANTA SAYS HAM
ATLANTA, Ga., Feb. 4.—Commer
cialized vice is rampant in Atlanta, de
clared Dr. J. W. Ham, pastor of the
Baptist Tabernacle, in a sensational I
sermon Sunday, attacking conditions
in seventeen hotels, where he charged
a five-cornered partnership between
owner, lease owner, sub-lessee, bell
bop and prostitute.
“At least seventeen hotels in this
city are dens of vice and immoral
practices,” declared Dr. Ham. “It is
the policy of these hotels to rent
rooms at so much per company. If
you cannot accept the company, you
cannot get a room. These human cul
tures roam through the hotels at night,
tapping on doors where soldiers and
civilians are quartered. They are sold
in white slavery to soldiers and civil
ians 4t stated times a balance sheet
is drawn between the hotels and the
‘female attendants,’ and the hotels get
their rake-off. The hotel owner gets
his profit; the lease owner gets his
profit; the sub-essee gets his profit;
tlip bell hop gets his commission cs a
take-out, and the poor, abandoned
prostitute gets what’s left. If the
city council lets the - operty owners
and other interested parties bluff them
cut of closing these hotels. Uncle Sam
is going to step in and C'ose them."
