HOOVER PREDICTS
BIG FOOD CRISIS
URGES CONGRESS TO PASS DRAS
TIC LEGISLATION MAKING
MEATLESS AND WHEATLESS
DAYS COMPULSORY.
WASHNGTON, Feb. 15.—Food Ad
ministrator Hoover urged immediate
action on the bill to conserve food
stuffs and establish “wheatless” and
“meatless” days at an executive ses
sion of the house committee on agri
culture.
He informed the committee that
drastic action is required because of
shortages in the nation’s food supplies
available for the six months from
Jan. 1. to July 1, 1918. He produced
figures showing marked decreases in
cereals, fats and meats, and showed
that congestion of freight cars has
been largely responsible for much of
the Western corn crop rotting in the
fields.
Instead of a bumper corn crop, as
generally supposed, the available sup
ply is greatly cut down, nstead of
producing 3,500.000,000 bushels only
about 2,000,000,000 bushels were pro
duced. Mr. Hoover estimated there
remains enough dry corn to supply
the Allies and American people, ap
proximately 137000,000,000 for this
country and 90,000,000 abroad. This
provides nothing for animals.
Bhere are only 100,000,000 pounds of
beef when there should be 450.000,000
pounds, Mr. Hoover declared, and it
was shown the nation is short from
six hundred million to one billion
pounds of such fats as pork products
and vegetable oils, about 50 per cent
is required.
The available supply of wheat for
consumption before the new harvest
is only 70 per cent of what is re
quired. The minimum supply on hand
is estimated at 257,000.000 bushels
and the maximum 281,000,000.
These figures show it is necessary
to t- 'drastic steps, Mr. Hoover said
and he urged the imperativeness of
most careful conservation by every?
body. He did not go into the details
of the administration of the law..
War Not Yet Near End.
SAVANNAH, Ga., Feb. 15.—" The wal
ls not at an end yet, and the military
power of Germany must and will be
crushed, when the American aero
plane fleet gets on the battle fronts in
France," said Major J. C. Bell, of the
Canadian artillery, who was a speaker
at the Rotary luncheon at the Hotel
Savannah here. He spoke of the bonds
of friendship kindled among the En
glish speaking people by the war.

The Times-Reoorder:
Dear Sir—The Americus and Sum
ter County Chamber of has
no doubt accomplished very satisfac
tory and profitable results since its
organization, and every loyal citizen
of our fair city has jusf cause to feel
proud of its achievements. However,
it has occurred the writer that in its
zeal to do large things, it is possible
that minor policies may have been ov
erlooked. Why not make provision
for, and encourage, the membership
of the large number of commercial
travelers who make their home in
Americus?
Some years ago I made my home in
another city, and scarcely had I gotten
located before the privilege of mem
bership in the Chamber of Commerce
was extended and urged; and, by the
way, this was about the livest and
most progressive organization of its
kind in the South; every possible ef
fort is made to land ne windustries,
conventions, public improvements,
etc., but these matters are not allow
ed to overshadow such minor things
as cultivating the spirit of local co
operation, friendly business inter
course, “boosting” the home town,
etc., and especial efforts are made to
enlist the traveling men.
The average traveling man is eith
er a “booster” or a “knocker” —de-
pending upon facts and conditions —
he takes no middle ground—and in
either case he is effective. His calling
(or profession) makes initiative nec
essary; he must cultivate command
ing approach; he must, furthermore,
be a man of intelligence and integri
ty, and naturally his opinions are re
spected. Given facts and conditions
which justify belief that he lives in
the “best town on earth,” and you can
rest assured that thos ewith whom he
comes in con ear about that
town.
My observation has been that those
travel!: g men who make American
their homes are an excellent lot of
first class business men; that some
o ? them are merel y“salaried” men is
no valid reason why they should not
l.e sed as substantial"business men
and entitled to all the privileges of
business intercourse enjoyed by their
more fortunate neighbors. I don t
know what, if any, provisions are
marie by the rules and regulations of
the Chamber of Commerce for admis
sion to membership of commercial
travelers; it may not be customary to
extend this privilege without volunta
ry api lieation. or perhaps traveling
men are not eligible; but I am sure
that, generally speaking, they are wor
thy of taking their place in the coun
cils of any organization having for
its object the best interests of the
community in which they reside.

WITHHARRIS CLUB
SAVANNAH, Ga., Feb. 15.—Follow
ing an organization meeting held some
tune ago, the William J. Harris club,
of Savannah, has been formally
launched into the field, with Capt. J.
M. Rogers as president; W. V. Davis
and J. C. Sater as vice presidents; M.
A. O’Byr ie as treasurer and F. A. Hili
as secretary. Savannahians are en
thusiastic and believe Mr. Harris the
only man in the race who can defeat
Hardwick. This opinion is not alone
shared by Savannahians but by Geor
gians generally and the newspaper
editors of the state who can truly be
said to reflect the sentiment of their
respective communities.

'PARIS, Feb. 15. —Nothing surprises
those arriving at Paris from London
more than to find how little the war
sceir* to intaiiere with the material
comforts of life in the French capital.
They <.an easily recall each occasion
on whi- h they had been able to obtain
a small amount of butter or margar
ine in London restaurants in a week
and can name the days when meat
wa s procurable in strictly limited
quantities.
The contrast in Paris is striking.
They see butcher shops filled with
meat —a sight London has forgotten
They see no long lines at the doors
of groceries. If early risers, they may
observe a dozen persons before the
milk depots, or far greater numbers
before tobacco shops. On the days
the delivery of new supplies is made
they can order a whole chicken in the
restaurants or a steak or portions
they have forgotten existed.
Though prices have increased im
mensely there is no sign of deficiency.
Victor Boret, minister of provisions,
announces further restrictions which
will b esubmitted to the cabinet on
Tuesday, and which will bring Paris
more in line with London —as they
will prevent, as the minister expresses
it, “grand” restaurants and shops
from selling luxuries.
All pastry, candy, fancy biscuits and
candied fruits will be entirely pro
hibited, and hotels and restaurants
