“A SPLENDID TONIC”
Says Hixson Lady Who, On Doc
tor’s Advice, lock Cardui
And Is How Well.
Hixson, Tenn.—"About 10 years ggpj
says K’rs. X B. Gadd, of i
this place. "I suffered with a pain in ,
my left side, could not sleep at night!
with, this pain, always in the left
side...
My doctor told me to use Cardui. I
took one bottle, which helped me and
after my baby came, I was stronger '
and better, but the pain was still
there.
I at first let it go, but began to get
weak and in a run-down condition, j
so I decided to try gome more Cardui,
which I did.
This last Cardui which I took made !
me much better, in fact, cured me. It |
has been a number of years, still I
have no return of this trouble.
I feel it was Cardui that cured me, |
and I recommend it as a splendid fe-;
male tonic.”
Don’t allow yourself to become j
weak and run-down from womanly •
troubles. Take Ca dui. It should sure- ■
ly help you, as it has so many thou- i
sands of other women in the past 401
years. Headache, backache, sideache, [
nervousness, sleeplessness, tired-out
feeling, are all signs of womanly trou
ble. Other women get relief by taking
Cardui. Why not ,'ou? AU druggists.

I MEXICO CITY, March 4. —False
i and alarming reports being printed
' by anti-American. pro-Gennan papers
! here, are beginning to prove something.
' of a boomerang, despite the clever
I loophole left for papers to crawl
j through when subsequent events prove
their accusations groundless. So often
, have the German propagandists cried
“wolf-' without that animal appearing,
that even those Mexicans most dis
trustful of the United States are be
ginning to doubt not only the accuracy
i of stories aimed at fomenting trouble
with Uncle Sam, but the entire con-
' tents of their cable pages.
Recently one newspaper announced
I under big headlines that American
> troops were on the point of being
; L.nded at Tampico. They were not
I landed, however, and the paper was'
j forced to this lead, seemingly having ■
hu*elected to frame an explanation in!
I advance should its news prove false. ‘
I i ater, howevei. this defect was reme- |
' <dc i. This time it was Canada and i
j Cuba, instigated by the United States'
I v. ho were to seize various Gulf of!
| Mexico ports to -prevent a threatened
I Ge.-nian submarine campaign in the,
I gulf against entente oil tankers from i
i Tampico,
; The fact that the ports were not seized
: was explained by the newspapers as
due to the fact that secrecy was neces-|
;,ai y o the plot, and that these news-!

i made is successful cornple- ’
l tion impossible.
: I’l dd’/iidn tO..playing up in extras..
! these wild yarns, these papers print,
i with dist'oritions and misleading head
lines, every piece of news that can'
de twisted into imtimating that the!
United States is constanly scheming'
to secure a pretext to occupy either I
all of Mexico or the Tampico oil
legions. The dominant tone of the!

giving up the struggle.
SHAKESPEARE'S HOME
ENTHUSIASTIC FOR 0.5.
STRATFORD - ON-AVON, England,
March 4.—Americans who in pre-war
days, delighted in visiting “Shake
speare’s Country,” would find many
changes here now.
Quietly and unostentatiously through
the unwearying efforts of Marie Co
relli, the novelist, and a few who sup
port her artistic tastes, these past
three and a half years have disclosed
the ancient mysteries of Stratford.
Old houses, with plastered walls,
which were eye-sores to the visitors
and residents alike, have been stripped
Gs their outward ugliness, to reveal
tbe quaint picturesque Tudor archi
tecture of Shakespeare’s time. Where
cver it has been possible the early
appearance of the buildings has been
restored, and the effect has been a
most transformation anrf the restora
tion of the place as Shakespeaje
knew it.
The ancient “Sword of State” which
hangs jn Shakespeare’s birthplace was
removed from its scabbard n August,
1914, as an official notice that England
was at war and the people say tra
dition forbids them to sheathe the old !
sword, carried by Shakespeare's fath- ■
er when he was a High Bailiff in 1568-
69, ifntil England is again at peace.
Once, at least, since war was de
clared, Shakespeare's old home has
given expression to its feeling of grati-.
tude to Americans for the tributes
they have been privileged to pay to
if from time to time. That was when
the United States entered the war.
President Wilson's memorable mes
sage to congress was proclaimed alouu
Many of the townfolk had almost de
spaired of the momentous event, and
it ppears there were only two Ameri
can flags in Stratford at the time.
One was a great banner owned by
Miss Marie Corelli and the other wav
ing from the house of John Harvard’s
mother . Both were promptly furled
cut into the breeze of the “garden
spot of England,” and thus America
had again come into the hearts of
Shakespeare’s people.
Paymaster is Robbed.

the Doehler Die Castings Company of
$8,900 in cash today near the compa
ny’s factory on the western outskirts
cf the city. A guard accompanying
the paymaster was shot, and the ban
dits escaped.

ROME, March 4.—Th e finest old pal
aces in Italy are gradually being turn-!
eu into habitations again after cen
turies of disuse, due to the need for
- hospitals and for shelter for (
the hundreds of thousands of refugees
from the invaded provinces. Part of ,
the "imense palace at Caseerta, built ,
in 752 for the King of Naples, com- (
monly known as the Versailles of ■
Italy has been turned into a barrack
for Austrian prisoners. Two years ,
ago Kink Victor Emanuel and Queen (
■Elena gav e the huge royal palace on ,
the Quirinal hill in Rome for use as a ,
hospital, and lately they even gave
their own private apartments to
refugee children.
Among the buildings belonging to
the Catholic church loaned for the
same purpose by order of Pope Bene
dict is the monastery of St. Anselm, :
on th e Aventine hill.
The American Red Cross has recom
mended the housing of refugees in
specially built huts as these places
ere unfitted for the homes of poor-or
working people.

GALLINGER CRITICIZES
INFORMATION BUREAU
WASHINGTON, D. C, March 4
In opposing the adoption of the con
ference report of the housing ibll to
provide $50,000,000 for the construc
tion of houses for laborers at the gov
ernment ship yards, Senator Gallin
ger, the republican leader, criticized
the bureau on public information, of
which George Creel is chairman.
“We gave the president of the Unit
ed States $100,000,000 and he has
passed. Ido not know how many mil
lions over to the Creel bureau, where
they are employing men at any salary |
that they chose to pay roll news
are putting on their pay roll news
paper correspondents to exploit what
they are doing and it is a grievance.
It is to my mind almost criminal
failure on our part to allow that sort
of a thing to go on.
“I have sent to the committee on
appropriations a resolution calling
for the names of the employees and
the salaries paid them by the Creel
bureau.
“I think the time has come when
congress ought to assert its rights as
a co-ordinate branch of the govern
ment and legislate according to its
own judgment and not because we are
tdd that it is an emergency, that
there is a crisis on the government
and that we ought to pass any kind of
bill sent to us.”

ATLANTA, Ga., March 4—Atlantal
school children are leading all cities of
200,000 population in the country in
the sale and.purchase of thrift stamps,
and among the various colleges and
private school there is equally as good
work. Girls of Elizabeth Mather Col
lege, a very remarkable school where
fashionable students are taught the I
practical as well as the cultural things,
have organized a War Savings So
ciety and are investing all their pin
money in thrift stamps. America is ■
the'richest nation on earth and yet
the most extravagant. Eighty per j
cent of the nation’s wealth is owned
by three per cent of the nation’s
population. Nothing but thrift and
saving, both in peace as well as war,
can save Amercia fro ma condition of
violent socialism toward which it is
new inevitably trending.

ATLANTA, Ga., March 4. —Marrying
in haste and repenting at leisure seems

Emma Jan e Isom, a second grade high

months of wedlock, which she claims
was anything else but the happy
romance she expected. She accused
her husband of keeping late hours, re
fusing to explain his whereabouts on
such occasions, failing to work, and
cruel treatment.
