APPEALS TO SOUTH
“I particularly appeal to the farmers of the South to plant
abundant foodstuffs as well as cotton. They can show their
patriotism in no better or more convincing way than by resist
ing the great temptation of the present price of cotton and help
upon a great scale, to feed the Nation and the peoples every
where who are figfhting for their liberties and for our own. The
variety of their crops will be the visible measure of their com
prehension of their national duty.”

IS PERMITTED OOIH
Methodist ministers, et al., whose
appetites lean strongly toward fried
chicken will ehar with interest that a
ruling by the Georgia food adminis
tration Saturday will permit the kill
ing of “broilers” weighing not more
than two pounds.
The ruling was an amendment to a
recent order prohibiting the slaughter
or sale of hens or pullets. The rule,
however, continues strictly in force
as applied to hens or pullets weigh
ing more than two pounds.
The administration also removed the
restriction against the use of lamb
or mutton on meatless Tuesday ana
for meatless meals of each day. This
ruling will be in effect at once and
until April 15. The “broiler” rule also
is effective immediately.
These rulings, the administration
states, will serve to narrow the scope
of the mat substitutes for those days
and meals on which the use of meat
is prohibited, and at the same time
eliminate the possibility of fish be
coming unpopular bectuse of its too
frequent use.

MERELY A BANKER;
AN AIR RAH) TALE
LONDON, March 4. —During a Ger
man air raid a British ihree-inch gun
founted on an automobile truck took
up its position in a fashionable resi
dential district directly in front of the
house of a wealthy banker stood the
racket of the barrage fire for a time,
but then walked out and said to the
officer in charge:
“I say would you mind taking that
thing a little further down the street?
We don’t like the row, and it’s fairly
shaking our walls.”
The young lieutenant was non
plussed for a moment.
“Look here” he finally snapped out,
‘do you take this for a blooming
hurdy-gui'fiy?”
And the barrage went on.
