WAYCROSS BANKER TO
OPPOSE EXTRADITION
ATLANTA, Ga., March 23. —Follow-
ing the action of Governor Dorsey
yesterday in honoring the requisition
of the governor of Illinois for Law
rence J. Cooper, president of the First
National Bank of Waycross, formerly
a member of the House of Represen
tatives from Ware county and a mem
ber of the steering committee which
put through the famous bone-dry bills
at the extra session of 1917, it was
agreed between attorneys for Mr. |
Cooper and Henry A Berger, assist-'
ant state’s attorney of Cook county. '
Illinois, who was here to prosecute
the requisition, that a warrant is to
be served on Mr. Cooper in Waycross,
that he shall then institute .proceed
ings for a writ of habeas corpus, and
shall make bond in the sum of $lO,-
000 pending the disposition of the
habeas corpus proceedings. The
warrant on which the requisition was
issued was sued out by Simon Hamber,
of Chicago, and charged Mr. Cooper
with fraud and confidence game. It
grew out of a controversy arising
from a real estate transaction between
Mr. Cooper and Hamburg, in which Mr.
Cooper traded certain south eorgia
lands for certain Chicago real estate
owned by Hamburfl. Mr. Cooper
claims that the Chicago .property was
grossly over-valued in the representa
tion made to him, while Hamburg as
serted tha Mr. Cooper made affidavit
to a clear title to the south Geor
gia lands, clear and free from all in
cumbrance, when as a matter of fact
he did not hold title.
