PETITION ULEB WITH RAILROAD:
COMMISSION AT ATLANTA TO
authorize shobtbr hoiks
FOR RECEIVING FREIGHT AND
MATTER WILL BE HEARD ON
AUGUST -M H.
The Central of Georgia railroad is
seeking authority tc close ite depot
at Americus, a» well as in other cities
an! towns throughout Georgia, at 4
o'clock each afternoon, except Sat
urdays. when it is proposed to close
at 1 o'clock.
The railroad has made formal ap
ple ation for authority te make the
hr.aee in opening and closing hours
ii.mc.ted. and the matter will be
hern, at the offices of the commission
in Atlanta at o'clock Wednesday
morning. August -’"th At that time
all parties who have objections to en
ter should do so
So far as The Times-Recorder is in
formed the present schedule of open
ing and closing hours is most satis
factory to local merchant*. and it is
yrcbable there will be an effort made
to have these retained. Salesmen who
reach the city on the 3:13 train from
points along the Seaboard, as well as
rteretiants from that section, now
find its passible to enter shipments in
the depot after their arrival here and
hav J same go out next morning on the
local train, but under the proposed
new atrangement this would hardly be
possible.
In tact, persons coming in on the
2 17 ti./i over the Central railroad,
would find it difficult to have their
oidet- taken and the freight hanl-d to
the depot in time to be received there
for despatch the next morning, if the
proposed change is put into effect, and
those who now come in from Colum
bus over the Central in the afternoon
v’l.vld also find it impossible to have
■neir freight shipped out the next
iuott>ing. This, it is believed, would
wotk to the detriment of Americus'
•justness interests, and it is believed
that a protest against the proposed
change in receiving hours will be en
'v'' red
Hightower, us the Cham
ber < f Commerce, has just returned
front Atlanta, where be went in the
inte'est of another matter, and it is
known the proposed change in hours
for receving freight will be brought
to his attention Whether or not he
will tall a special meeting of the
commissioners to take action thereon
cannot be stated at this time.
