HOUSE REJECTS AMENDMENT
THAT WOULD REQUIRE THE
CALLING OF YOUTHS UNDER
TWENTY-ONE YEARS OF AGE
ONLY AFTER OTHERS ABOVE
AGE HAD BEEN INDI ( TED INTO
SERVICE
WASHINGTON, D. C.. August 24
Champions of the House committee’s
plans to direct the war department to
defer calling of youths of 18 and 19
years until older men have joined the
colors under the manpower bill ex
tending the draft age limits of 18 to
45 years, lost their initial fight in the
house late Friday and the way was
paved for the passage of the bill by
the house today.
In the senate, disposal of minor
amendments aused leaders to hope
that the measures could be passed
there also before the week-end ad
journment today.
’ At the close of the day a vigorous
debate the House rejected, 167 to 27
the amendment of Representative Mc-
Kenzie, of Illinois, written into the
bill by the military committe direct
ing separate classification and de
layed calls of youths fro mlB to 20.
Amendments by Representative John
son. of Washington, and Blackmon,
of Alabama, to fix the draft age min
imum at 19 and 21 years respectively,
also were defeated.
Dramatic touches were given the
debate in the House by Representa
tive Tilson, of Connecticut, who call
ed amid cheers upon four marines in
the galleries to stand in evidence that
youths of 18 make excellent soldiers.
This was after Representative John
son. of Washington, has presented a
small 18 year old page in soldier
coat and trench, helmet to support his
Claim that 18 years old are mere chil
dren.
