! FIRST MONDAY 15 SEPTEMBER
WILL LE GALA OCCASION IN
AMERICUS, IF PLANS BEING
WORKED ON NOW ARE h <
I ESSFUI BALL GAME D BL
PART OF BIG PROGRAM.
Labor Day—the first Monday >n
September—will be appropriately
observed in Americus this year.
At least it is planned to have a big
gathering here on that occasion with
thousands of visitors and arrange
ments for entertaining one of the big
gest crowds ever brought to .-dtneri
cus.
A ball game will be a feature of the
occasion with two teams from Souther
Field contending for honors. The
game, it is planned, will be played
on Dudley Field, that scene of bo
many historic battle between the old
'Americus invincibles and visitin.;
teams, especially outfits representing
Albany and Cordele. oßth these
cities will be represented, at the gath
ering here on Labor Day, and the
sport will be of the very best.
The Post team from Souther Field
will go to Camp Wheeler, Macon, on
Labor Day for a game with that out
fit from that camp, but there is plenty
of talent in the forces at the aviation
field here, and two fast teams will
play some snappy ball for the enter
tainment of all who come here. H. S.
Lipscomb, director of athletics at the
Army Y. M. C. A. at Souther Field,
conceived the idea of a Labor Day
celebration here, and to him should
be given credit for the entertainment,
in the ©vent the plans now made
realized.
The officials of the Chan&er O'-
Commerce are to be consulted at
once, and the military authorities at
the aviation field will aslo be asked
to contribute toward the success of
the occasion... Major Wash will be
requested to release every enlisted
man from duty as far as practicable,
and it is believed there will be the
greatest assemblage of people ever
seen in Americus will be here for the
festivities. plans for the oc
casion have not been completed, and
additional announcements will be
made from time "to time.
WOULD INTERN ALL
WHO ARE SLACKERS
ATLANTA, Ga., August 27.—That
the man who refuses either to work
or to fight should be interned as a
common enemy and made to render
service is one- of a number of strik
ing statements contained in the ser
mon of the Rev. J. W. Ham yesterday
at the Baptist Tabernacle. His sub
ject was “Emperor William, the Mod
ern Belshazzar, the Handwriting Is
Now on the Wall.”
He introduced it with a discussion
of the new; work or fight law in Geor
gia. and in the course of his remark;
declared that every non-producing'
citizen of Georgia is a parasite upon
democracy, a barnacle upon the ship
of state; and that every loafer is a
i “friend of the kaiser and should be
looked upon with supreme disgust
and contempt by every loyal Ameri
' can.” I
He hit out good and strong against
the pool-rooms, “'immitation beer
joints cheap places of amusement,
DaAce halls, eating places and street
corner fashion plates oggling thd" wo
men as they pass.”
Dr. Ham says that the kaiser's time
is-near, and that the nandwilting
pointing to his end is clearly to be
seen upon the wall of history.
