SERIES OF SERMONS
AT FIRST METHODIST
BEGAN ON SUNDAY
*
A laige congregation was present
at the First Methodist church last
night to hear the opening sermon of
the series on “Sin.” Rev. p. W. Ellis
took for his text James 1:15 “Then,
when lust hath conceived it bringeth
forth sin."
In answer to the huestion, “Where
does sin come from?” Mr. Ellis said
that it doesn't come from an evil
deity, as the ancient Egyptians, Baby
lonians and Persians taught.. Neither
does it arise out of the mere “absence
of good," and thus force upon us the ■
conclusion that alj sins of the world
are effects which have no real and
adequate cause. It is not forced upon
us by our fallen nature and unfavor
able environments. These can tempt
us to sin but cannot make us- sin
Where, then, does it come from?
James says it comes from “lust.” But

holy desire. This desire, born of our
own fallen nature; raised and in
tensified by the enticements of our
evil environment, and overshadowed
and fostered by satan. finally secures
the acquiescence the will, and then
the evil choice is made and the evil
deed is done. Thus every man, led
on by his own desires, enters the
realm of actual sin through the doors
of his own liberty. And every man
who wilfully sins, does so because h<
wants to.
Next Sunday evening Mr. Ellis will
discuss this desire as it sets itself
upon the world, and study the effect
of worldliness upon character.
