LAST SHELL OF
BIGGEST BERTHA
HIT TENNESSEAN
ATLANTA, Feb. 12.—Back in the
U. S. A. after more than a year in Y.
M. C. A. service overseas is Livesey E.
Williams, a lawyer of Chattanooga,
Tenn., who complains that he is the
unluckiest of the more than 6,000 “Y”
men who were sent to France. In Au
gust he went to Paris during a lull in
the fighting to have some dental work
done. Four months and a half later
de was discharged from a hospital
where surgeons had removed from a
cavity in his hip what they said was
tie largest shell fragment they had
even taken from a man who recovered.
That was lucky for him, Williams ad
mits. but the unlucky part was that
this fragment flew from the last shell
thrown into Paris by the German
long-range gun, and it hit him after
he had gone through weeks of heavy
fighting at Cantigny and Soissons
without getting as much as a scratch.
Williams tried twice to get into a
combat branch of the military machine
and actually put in several weeks at
Fort Oglethorpe. Ga., before the army
surgeons rejected him. Then he en
listed in the Red Triangle army, spent
three months at Camp Jackson, S. C.,
and finally sailed for France in De
-cember, 1917. He was assigned to the
first division and joined the regulars
without any noticeable enthusiasm on
their part. In a few months he was
•so solid with them that their eflicers
had instructed the top sergeants to
provide army trucks for the “Y” man
any time he needed their assistance in
getting supplies.
■“The satisfaction that I derived from
being able to get close to these men,"
said Mr. Williams at the hr adcuarters
of the Y. M. C A. War Work Council,
“more than compensates me for the
months that I spent in a hospital and
the fact that I may be lame all the
rest of my life It got so after a time
that I didn’t have to ask the top
sergeant for a detail when there was
more work to be done than I could do
alone. These men just natura'ly saw
things to do, and volunteered to do
• hem. I don't think this spirit wag
aroused by the chocolate that I made
fcr them, the tobacco that I obtained
♦or them, the athletic supplies that the
“Y” furnished or the religious services
that I arranged.

It was in April that the Ist Division,
brigaded with the French an Cantigny,
had the honor of being the first Amer
can unit to go into action in a major
operation. Williams put up his Red
Triangle sign at a dugout. In front
of him were the light artillery units
and behind him the American heavy
artillery pieces. He was literally
within a rim of fire. Near him a
railroad junction was a legitimate tar
get for German guns. He learned to
withstand the nervous shock of the
big shells which the soldiers called
freight cars, because of the noise they
made as they rushed through the air;
and he sympathized with the negroes
who said that the whiz-bangs made
them homesick because they seemed
to say “Alabam.”
After finishing the job at Cantigny
tne First went to Soissons. where Wil
liams says as much excitement was
crowded into three days as a month
and a half had produced at Cantigny.
There was a shortage of stretcher
bearers because of the violence of the
fighting and the heavy casualties and
for half a day Williams closed up
the “Y” shop and went into action on
the front end of a litter. No wonder
that when the division was transfer
red to Nancy to prepare for the cam
paign at St. Mihiel and in the Argonne,
and Williams went to Paris to have

which formerly were possible of en

i “The value of the contribution of
this leave area system to the Y. M. C.

boys themselves come home. I have
never yet heard of an American sol
dier who had spent his leave in any
one of the seven leave areas operated
by the “Y” who was not enthusiastic
about the entire program of the asso

girls are overseas serving our boys in

known that the “Y” can entertain
more than 40.000 men at a time and is
planning to double the facilities if
suitable areas can be located.”

to his home in central Tennessee and
later will hang out his shingle in Chat

Raid of Pullmans
Uncovers Much Rye
ATLANTA. Feb. 12.—Importing li
quor into Atlanta on dining cars and
in the linen lockers of Pullman sleep
ers is getting to be a dangerous and
hazardous business, as the federal and
state and city officers are close in be
hind the Pullman porters and dining
car flunkies.
When a train from Cincinnati roll
ed into the union station Saturday a
squad of city detectives and federal
officers presented the conductor with
a set of search warrants and proceed
ed to go through the car from stem to
stern, with the result that several
dozen pints of bottled in bond rye
whisky, bearing the label of various
Cincinanti concerns, were found in
the lockers and pantries and ice boxes.
Blind tiger whisky in Atlanta has
now narrowed down to two distinct
types:
1. The mountain dew liquor brought
into the city by moonshiners from the
Blue Ridge, who run the blockade
with cleverly constructed automobile
gas tanks.
2. Cheap rye liquor from Cincin
nati, brought into the city by the
dining and Pullman car route.

Fulton County Hires
All DeKalb’s Convicts
ATLANTA, Feb. 12.—Fulton county
has tentatively perfected arrange
ments to lease the convict gang of
DeKalb county and,put them to work
on Fulton county roads, while DeKalb
county will carry on her road work
program by contract.
DeKalb county’s gang dwindled to
such small proportions that convicts
could no longer be utilized economic

Hence the DeKalb authorities decided
to abolish their convict force and let
out their road builidng to contractors.
They submitted a proposition to the
Fulton authorities that was accepted,
and the switch will be made in the
next few days.
Fulton county is to pay sls per
month per man for the convicts, and

GOING BACK TO NATURE.
BY DR. W. LUCAS.
' People get sick because they go away
from Nature, and the only way to get
well is to go back. Something grows out
of the ground in the form of vegetation
to cure almost every ill. Some of these
vegetable growths are understood by
man, and some are not. Animals, it
would seem, know what to do when
they are sick better than men and
women. Observers have noted that a
sick horse, dog or cat will stop eating
food and seek out some vegetable
growth in the field or yard, which, when
found and eaten, often restores appetite
and health. Haven’t you seen these
animals do this very thing yourself?
Dr. Pierce, of Buffalo, N. Y., long
since found the herbs and roots pro
vided by Nature to overcome constipa
tion, and he had these vegetables col
lected and made up of Mayapple, leaves
| of Aloe, root of Jalap, into little white
sugar-coated pills, that he called Dr.
Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets. You must
j understand that when your intestines
I are stopped up, poisons and decayed
1 matter are imprisoned in your system,
and these are carried by the blood
> throughout your body. Thus does
' your head ache, you get dizzy, you
can’t sleep, your skin may break out,
your appetite declines, you get tired
and despondent. As a matter of fact,
you may get sick all over. Don’t you
see bow useless all this suffering is ?
All that is often needed is a few of
Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets, which he
has placed in all drug stores for your
i convenience and health. Try them by
i all means. They are probably the very
thing you need right now.
