U.S. TREASURER,
DIES AT CAPITAL
George Fort, asisstant treasurer of
the United States and formerly a resi
dent of Americus for a time, died un
expectedly in Washington Tuesday
morning of heart failure.
Mr. Fort, who was an uncle of Hol
lis Fort and a brother of the late
Judge Allen Fort, of Americus, was a
native of Stewart county and went to
the treasury department from Lump
kin in 1893, under President Cleve
land’s administration.
He is survived by a brother, Lynn
Fort, of Atlanta, manager of the La
mar Rankin Drug Co.; his wife, two
sons, Lieut.-Commander George Fort,
Jr., in the navy, and Carter Fort, of
Washington, D. C., and one daughter,
Frances.
Mr. Fort, who at the time of his
death was 58 years of age, was the
son of the late James A. Fort, of
Lumpkin.

A dance will be given at the Sol
diers’ club on Friday evening under
the auspices of the War Camp Com
munity Service Invitations will be
issued today and several committees
will be formed from the members for
decorating, preparing refreshments
and attending to other details of the
dance. It is hoped that the dances
may be of weekly occurrence, as the
soldiers need diversion and enjoy danc
ing more than any other form of
amusement. A number of visiting
girls will be present and altogether
' the occasion promises to be a most en
' joy able one.

Forty-Two Club Meets.
Mrs. E. M. Viquesney was the Forty
two club’s hostess this afternoon
when she gave a lovely party at her
home on Taylor street. The house was
abloom with woodland flowers, pink
■ honeysuckle, dogwood and flowering
pears being used with charming effect.
Enjoying Mrs. Viquesney’s hospitality

Aviation Warehouse
Wants 30 Laborers
The Times-Recorder’s telephone
rang. Lieut. Armstrong of the Avia
tion General Supply Depot, was talk
ing
“Well, you brought us the chauf-l
feurs and the other men that we need
ed to fill the vacancies out here,” said
he, “and now I wish you would you
would tell the people of Americus that
we need some laborers. Tell them we
can use about fifty men from this time
on regularly, either white or colored,
and will pay 25 cents an hour for about
8 hours’ work. Tell them our truck—
the long one with the green tag, distin
guishing it from the truck going to
Souther Field—will leave the Windsor
hotel at 7:30 o’clock each morning,
reaching the supply depot about 8
o’clock. The truck leaves the depot
for the city at 5 o’clock each after
noon. Tell them that they can either
bring their lunch or buy it at the
depot for 25 cents.
“Fifty men, 25 cents an hojir, long
truck with green tag, 7:30 a. m. That’s
all.”

Mrs. M. M. Jennings and Mrs. Char
ley Lunsford entertained a car full of
friends delightfully at supper given
in the ivoods. Fish were carried out
and cooked deliciously on an open fire.
Coffee, breads and fruits were served
with the fish. The evening in the
spring was followed by a joy ride.
Reese Andrews, Jr., was host at a
birthday dinner Saturday. Fifty-two
children accepted the invitation to
celebrate the youngster’s tenth birth
day. The invitations uniquely contain

outdoor games were played by the
young guests, and at 1 o’clock a pic
nic dinner was spread under the
trees, consisting of barbecued meat,
fried chicken, bread, cakes and ice
cream. After dinner more games were
played until the party dispersed.

umbus, are visiting Mrs. J. B. Clarke.
Miss Maggie Jenkins spent the week
end with her mother in Dooling, Ga.
Clarence Parks, of Albany, spent the
week-end with Mr. and Mrs. M. M.
Jennings.
Ross Dean made a business trip to
Albany Monday in the interest of the
Oliver-McDonald Co.
Mrs. Walter Wadson, of Montgomery,
has been visiting Mrs. Joe Hiller this
week.
Mrs. Jim Davidson, of Marshallville,
is the guest of Mrs. Leonard Jen
nings.
Alton Montgomery is at home on a
twenty day furlough. Mr. Montgom
ery is in the aviation camp at Waco,
Texas. He thinks it will probably be
some months before he is discharged..
i Herman Forth is at home now, hav
ing reecived his discharge recently
from service. Mr. Forth is one of four
brothers who have been in the army.
Miss Alice Ruth Timmerman and
Miss Marguerite Hudson, with several
friends, attended the recital in Amer
icus, given by the Georgia Glee club
Monday night.
Mrs. S. F. Jones has returned home
from Concord, Ga., where she has
been visiting her daughter, Mrs. G. A.
Strickland.
Mrs. Elam G. Hanks, of Shreveport,
La., is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Gard
nes.
Mrs. Louise Ferguson and Miss Mary
Lou Feagin were hostesses at a lovely
dinner party given in honor of Mrs.
Jim Davidson, who formerly resided
in Plains. A delicious meal of six
courses was served. The guests were

Latest news from Charley Crawford,
of the U. S. navy, states that he is at
present in Holland.
Mrs. P. C. Barkley and two child
ren are the guests of Misses Sara Ann
and Mint Goss. Mrs. Barkley, former
ly a resident of Plains, is on her re
turn from Florida, where she has been
for the winter, to Macon, Miss.
Miss Lucy Kate Clarke spent the
week-end with her parents. Miss
Clarke is teaching in Ellaville.
Mrs. Jim Dozier, of Bronwood, is vis
iting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. C.
Berker.
Mrs. M. L. Sutherlin, who has been
spending several months with Mrs. H.
R. McGee, has returned home.
Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Lcwery, Jr., are
visiting relatives in Greenville, S. C.
John Feagin has accepted a position
in Americus lately and will probably
be away from Plains after this.
