CATTLE EXPERT
HERE, TELLS OF
DAIRY BREEDS
The following article on the com
parison of dairy breeds was prepared
by Wm. H. Howell, cattle expert of
the Georgia State College of Agricul
ture, who is in Americus assisting in
the organization of a bull association
for Sumter County.

Agriculture.
Wisconsin sells cattle each year to
every state in the Union. The prices
are far above the average. Buyers
go there because they can get as many
animals as they want in a small terri
tory. A county is known as a Hol
stein or a Jersey county because the
farmers have gotten together and
agreed to push the breed best suited to
the greater number of men. Thous
ands of cows of the selected greed are
bred to the very best pure bred bulls
of the same breed and buyers come
because they know these farmers have
good cows and they are willing to
pay for them. Mey buying in carlots
pay more money than the local buyers.
Breed Dliat Your Neighbor Breeds.
■One farmer in northern Wisconsin
inas a wonderful herd of Holstein,
while all his neighbors have Guerseys
and he can not understand why it is
that all the buyers pass him up. He
is pulling against instead of with his
neighbors and buyers never hear of
his cows because the Guernsey breed
ers advertise the large number of cows
for sale by all the farmers and the
Holstein man does not have enough
. animals to get buyers. A good many
Georgia farmers seem to think the
way to sell stock is to breed some
thing different from that bred by their
neighbors, but that has long ago prov
en to be a failure.
Sumter County farmers should select
one breed of dairy cattle as nearly as
possible in order to attract buyers
from a distance. What breed should
be chosen? It is desired here to dis
cuss in an impartial manner the
characteristics of the Holstein and
Jersey breeds which are the ones rep
resented here.
Milk and Cream.
The Holstein gives more milk than
the Jersey but it is not as rich in
butter fat, averaging about 3145 per
cent, for the breed, while the Jersey
breed averages about 5:00 per cent,
butter fat. The Holstein cow gives
enough more milk to make the yield
of butter fat for the year about the
same as that for the Jerseys. Jersey
milk is more highly colored and looks

Dorothy and Lillian Gish who appear in “Hearts of the World” at
the Opeia House April 11 and 12.
"Hearts of the World", the pro
duction that is conceded to be D. W.
Grfflth’s masterpiece, surpassing both
his “Intolerance” and the “Birth of a
Nation, will be the attraction at the
Opera House, Americus, for three per
formances, Friday night, April 11 and
aturday matinee and night, April 12.
The fact that Mr. Griffith spent
aighteen months on the battlefields
of France with his company of Ameri
can players, would seem to indicate
hat "Hearts of the World” is a war
play. To the contrary, and on the
authority of the famous director him
self, it is not about the war, but about
people to whom the war comes—and
for this reason it makes the war real.
Many of the recent films have been
devoted so exclusively to photographs
of fighting that, for all they have re
vealed, the war might be limited to the
scenes recorded by the camera. Oth
ers have so insulted intelligence and
pure patriotism with theatrical rub
bish, tacked-on melodrama, clumsy
studio fakes and other devices thht
many persons are inclined to believe
the producers guilty of burlesqueing
the war, were such a thing thinkable.
Mr. Griffith has proved by his “The
Birth of a Nation” and other master
works that he is a man who does
big things in a big way; one who stops
at nothing, however seemingly insur
■ mountable, in his honest efforts to
faithfully reproduce a given condition.
Hence the very fact that Mr. Griffith’s
name and reputation are back of
"Hearts of the World” is an assur-

wonderful musical score arranged to
interpret every scene and even the ac

the large orchestra carried by the pre

Catarrhat Ucatness Cannot Be Cured
by local applications, as they cannot reach
the diseased portion of the ear. There is
only one way to care catarrhal deafness,
and that is by a constitutional remedy.
Catarrhal Deafness is caused by an*' in
flamed condition of the mucous lining of
the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is
inflamed you have a rumbling sound or Im
perfect hearing, and when it is entirely
closed, Deafness is the result. Unless the
Inflammation can be reduced and this tube
restored to its normal condition, hearing
will be destroyed forever. Many cases of
deafness are caused by catarrh, which is
an inflamed condition of the mucous sur
faces. Hail’s Catarrh Medicine acts thru
‘he bicod on the mucous surfaces of the
system.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for
any case of Catarrhal Deafness that cannot
be cured by Hall’s Catarrh Medicine. Cir
