I CAMPAIGN LIE
| NO. 11S NAILED
I At the last minute unscrupulous enemies I
of the Sumter County bond issue have cir- I
culated reports throughout the county that the proposed I
paving of the rural highways will cost $28,000 per mile, I
I and; therefore, will not permit the completion of the job. This statement is I
I absolutely false. I
I Richmond County, Georgia, has just awarded a contract for concrete road I
I paving under conditions similar to those in Sumter county, that is with grad- I
■ ing done and bridges built. Read.this telegram from Augusta: I
I Augusta, Ga., 4:42 p. m. April 7, 1919. Joseph Perkins, Secretary, Chamber Commerce, Ameri- I
| cus, Ga. Roads already graded and bridges built. Road twenty feet wide, paved at approximate I
I cost of seventeen thousand dollars per mile. LLOYD T. HALL, Secretary, Board of Commissioners, I
I Richmond county. I
I THEN READ THIS
I J. B. Ansley, city engineer of Americus, who built the concrete paving in I
I Americus and is, an engineer of high reputation and many years’ experience, I
I recently was asked privately for an estimate of the cost of concrete road pav- I
| ing. Here is what he replied in writing: I
I “With reference to approximate estimate of material and cost for concrecte pavement for an 18- I
■ foot roadway, 6 inches thick on the outer edges and 8 inches thick in the center, of a mix the same I
I as we constructed on our city streets, i. e. what we call 1-2-3 proportioniate mix, would be as follows: I
f 1700 cu. yds. (2295 tons) gravel delivered on job at $3.03 . . $5,151.00 1
I 900 cu. yds. (1215 tons ) sand delivered on job at $2.75 . • . 2,353.00 1
I 2550 bbls, cement delivered on job at $2.60 . . .• . . 6,630.00 I
■ Cost of material per mi1e514,134.00 ■
■ “To construct this pavement with the county’s own forces of convict labor would figure a cost I
I of perhaps less than S4OO per mile, and to do the work with hired labor at the present scale of wages I
I would perhaps cost $1,600 per mile.” I
I Mr. Ansley’s estimate was dated March 7. Since that time cement has decreased in price, as I
S well as other ingredients. , ' ’ I
I These are facts, over the signatures of reputable men who know what they are talking about. I
