WILSON REFUSES
TO INTERVENE
IN PHONE STRIKE
PARIS, April 19.—(8y Associated
Press.) — President Wilson this morn
ing cabled Secretary Tumulty, de
clining the request he received from
the New England governors to inter
vene in the telephone strike in New
England. He said he couldn’t act in
telligently at this distance.
KEENS ON JOB TO
SETTLE PHONE STRIKE.
BOSTON, April 19.—(8q Associat
ed Press.) —Assistant Postmaster Gen
eral Keens, chairman of the wire con
trol board, told representatives of the
striking telephone workers today that
he saw no reason why the strike
could not be settled within a few
hours. He said’he had full power
from Postmaster General Burleson to
adjust the difficult.
Americus Hi Nine
Trounces Albany
The fast Americus High school
baseball team played its second game
of the season Friday at Albany, where
it defeated the Albany team by a
score of 8 to 5. The game was de
clared by the members of the team to
have been clean and fast, with ex
cellent work on both sides.
Johnson and Monohan were the
batteries for Americus, and Johnson
was the star o fthe game. Besides
pitching excellent ball he hit a spec
tacular and exceedingly long home
run with one man on the base.
The team is planning on a long and
successful season, preparation being
on foot for continuing to play weekl’
until July. The first game of the
season was played Friday of the yie
vious week with the Souther Field
team, on which there are said to be
at least two former professionals. The
soldiers won this game ny one point,
the score being 4 to 3.

‘The sixth city letter carrier has
been added to the loc alpostoffice, the
government having granted the re
quest of Postmaster Davenport for the
additional man. The new carrier has
already taken up his work, which has
resulted in the extension of the home
delivery service.
The carriers cover the city for a
radius of one mile from the postoffice.
When only five carriers did the work
the less thickly populated)portions of
the outskirts could not be given the
same attention that it is no wpossible
to give them, according to Mr. Daven
port.
