PAGE FOUR PLANE CARRIE 4 MEN, TESTING FORCOTTONTRIP Harrold Bros., cotton warehouse men, have agreed to see that a bale of Sumter county cotton is provided for transportation by airplane from Souther Field to Lowell, Mass., there to be made into cloth and returned to Americus. This announcement was made today as a deta'l in the ar rangements for the trip which has been authorized by the air service. Frank P. Harrold and George A. Plaire, of the Atlantic compress, vis ited Souther Field Tuesday afternoon and, after consultation with Colonel Rader, it was decided to compress the bale into such a shape and size as to permit it being loaded into the rear cockpit of a DeHaviland 4. In order to test out the carrying power of a DeHaviland, Lieut. Alfred W. Vance, pilot, carried three passen gers in a ship at Souther Field this morning at one time. The passen gers were Privcto? Ruircll and Milan and Lieut. McMullen, aggregating fcbout 450 pounds weight. This is the first time an airplane of this na ture has ever carried four persons at one time. An altitude of 3,000 feet was quickly attained and the ship remained up one half hour with no difficulty experienced, demonstrat ing that the ship can be successfully used to carry a bale of cotton.
