Every girl who is “waiting” should see
this picture. See what the memory of a
girl he’d met only twice made of a man!
, The boy here started “yellow,” but he
ended—one of the boys who helped put
Victory across. Just the kind of a hero
your sweetheart is! See for yourself!
Wallace Reid never did anything finer
than this picture.

BRYAN IN SPEECH
PAYS TRIBUTE TO
SPEAKER CRISP
Continued from Page 1
the soldiers were coming back from
the war ready to overturn prohibi
tion which had been thrust upon them
in their absence, he showed by dates
that the congress which passed the
natonal prohibition amendment and
the legislatures of the necessary rat-
I ifying states had all been elected
before the men entered the war,
I showing that these men actually had
. a part in enacting prohibition legis-
I lation.
“To say that these men are now
: coming back from France to over
\ turn the constitution that they helped
amend and which they took an oath
I to support is a cruel slander upon
the finest soldiers upon the face of
i the earth,” he said.
; Mr. Bryan spoke easily, clearly,
and with much of his old-time charm,
but he appeared to be aging rapidly,
i and lacked much of the fire and vigor
of former days. He is 59 years of age
and has been making speeches day
after day for the greater part of
i every year for the last quarter cf a
i century.
Bui notwithstanding a life of great
i events and great associations, Mr.
Biyar is a man of simple tastes and
simple habits. When he arrived in the
city Friday afternoon by train from
Waycross he was carrying in his
hand several ripe Scuth Georgia to
matoes. They had been in a paper
; bag, but the tomatoes had burst the
and the bag had melted away in their
i juice to a large extent, but Mr. Bryan
clung to them, and was still holding
them fondly and hopefully when he
hit the road for Columbus where hr
I intended to have them iced for his
i supper.
A feature of the meeting was the
I presence of the local Boy Scout troop
in uniform under Scoutmaster Jas.

I Bryan’s Stories Keep
His Hearers Laughing
. Here Are 4 of Them
Oneof the charms of William Jen
-1 nings Bryan’s oratory lies in the wit
with which he brightens his speeches,
and he told numerous anecdotes in his
address at the First Baptist church
! Friday afternoon which kept his,
1 hearers in a merry mood. For the
benefit of those who did not hear
them, a few of his stories are set
down here:
» * *
Mr. Bryan was deprecating the fact
that John Barleycorn was defended
by lawyers in many places.
“I know lawyers well enough to
know that as long as the money holds
i out there will be lawyers fighting pro
j hibition. They are the exception,
and not the rule, however.
“They recall the story of two Irish
men, both broke, who were going
along the road. Coming to a pond,
I one of them noticed a sign which
read $5 reward for saving a drown
in gperson.’ They decided that one
of them should fall in and the other
save him, they to split the $5 reward.
After the one chosen to fall in had
splashed around a bit without being
rescued, and was nearing exhaustion,
he called to his companion for an ex
planation.
“ ‘I have just found another sign
which says $lO reward for recovering
a dead body,’ was the reply.
“It looks like some lawyers would
! rather Wait and help recover the
dead body of John Barleycorn than
to join in the rescue work for the liv
ing.”

Illustrating the attitude of some
: people who say that prohibition does
not prohibit, and the strength with
which the prohibition laws are being
built, Mr. Bryan said:

blows very strong out there, so he
was building-it of stone and mortar.
A neighbor came along and told him
it was no use to build a fence in Kan
sas, for the wind would blow it over.
1 “ ‘All right,’ said the farmer, ‘l’m
building it 3 and a half feet high and
-four feet thick, so if it blows over
it will be half a f<ot higher than it
is now.”
I “You people down South don’t real
ize what we democrats up north have
'had to go through with all these
years. Our party has borne the la
bel of the Liquor Party, and they
came pretty near proving it on us.
But, thank God, it was the Demo
cratic party that put through national
I prohibition and the Democratic
'South that took the lead in the move
, ment. They used to tell a story all
[ through the North that was very hu
miliating to us democrats. It was
•about Abraham Lincoln and Stephen
A. Douglas, when they were cam
paigning together for the presidency,
j They were walking down the street
'one day when in front of them they
I saw a staggering man.
| “ ‘Well, there goes one of your
party,’ remarked Lincoln.
i “‘You’re wrong,’ replied Douglas;
j‘l know him and he is a member of
jyour party.’
| “ ‘We‘ll leave it to the man,’ agreed
I Lincoln, and they approached him.
| ‘Mr. Douglas is right; lam a Re
publican,’ said the man, ‘but I have
Democratic symptoms.’
“Now think of us having to have
that story told on us all those years.”

Mr. Bryan was illustrating the
hoodwinking methods of the brewers
and distillers.
“They put me in mind, ’ said he,
“of the ventriloquist who was a bit
hard pressed and who dropped into a
saloon with a dog he had picked up.
Ordering a glass of beer, he made
the dog appear to say to the barten
der, ‘l’ll take a sandwich.’ The bar
tender, much amazed to hear a talk
ing dog, and thinking he could make
a great drawing card of the animal
in the saloon, offered the ventrilo
quist SIOO for him. When the money
was paid the ventriloquist started
out. As he reached the door he
pitched his voice to make the dog
say, ‘What, are you going to sell me
and leave me here?’ ‘Yes,’ answered
the ventriloquist in his natural voice.
‘l’ll never speak again,’ was the
dog’s rejoinder, and he never did.”
