CEORGIA MEAN
VAST WEALTH
COLUMBUS, June 21.—Iowa
owns one motor car for every seven
persons, and Georgia one for every
thirty. The reason is the buying pow
e.' and per capita wealth of lowa are
greater than they are in Georgia.
Georgia the fourth state in agri
ultural production, with about 30 pet
cent of her area in cultivation. lowa
is one of the first in agricultural
production, with about 60 per cent of
her area in cultivation.
A state system of permanent high
ways for Georgia should so ’ncrease
the production of Georgia as to make
her the first state in agriculture and
per capita wealth.
In which event the number of mo
tor vehicles in Georga should in
crease to the number per capita in
lowa. Georgia will then own with her
present population 419,000 motor ve
hicles. 107,000 motor vehicle tag.
were issued to June 1 in Georgia.
Not only will 300,000 more cars be
sold in Georgia as a result of a state
system of permanent highways, but
also other savings and earnings be
cause of the highway system will
during a period twenty years total
$12,250,000,000; about one half of
the war indemnity levied on Germa
ny.
Georgians cannot afford to run
any risk in securing these benefits.
There is a grave possibility that no
state highway laws will be enacted at
the coming session of the assembly
unless the people are organized in
favor of specific legislation.
The Georgia Highways associa
tion is circulating petitions and form
ing county branches of the associa
tion in every county in the state. Ev
ery citizen desiring to see the Geor
gia Highway system started is asked
to join that association and advocaV
the early passage of the assembly
highway bills as drawn by the special
legislative committee of the Assem
bly and endorsed by the Association
of County Commissioners of Georgia
the Georgia Automobile association,
the Georgia Highways association
and hundreds of other organizations.

Major Truman D. Thorpe.
GAINESVILLE, June 21.—Major
Truman D. Thorpe, U. S. A., has been
named as the head of the West Point
and Annapolis Preparatory Depart
nent of Riverside Military Academy
at this place, according to announce
neit just.made by Col. Sandy Beaver,
its president.
With this announcement begins the
inauguration in September of the
above mentioned preparatory depart
ment, which will confine its efforts ex
clusively to the preparation of candi
dates for the entrance examinations
to the United States Military Acad
emy at West Point, and to the Unit
ed States Naval Academy at Annap
olis, and to the preparation of candi
dates who are entering these acade
mies by certificate, on the difficult
first year’s work of these institutions,
the failure to carry which results in
practically all failures there.
Riverside is peculiarly fortunate in
'securing as the head of this depart
ment Major Thorpe, who for the past
two years has been an instructor in
mathematics, having charge of the
first year’s work at West Point. Dur
; ing his stay there, he assisted in the
correction of more than two thous
and entrance examination papers, and
is tohroughly conversant with every
thing pertaining to the course of
study; the methods of instruction in
both, and the numerous points on
which candidates find, the greatest dif
ficulty both before and after en
trance.
Major Thorpe will teach personally
all of the mathematics in this course
and will supervise the Instruction of
the remaining branches.
Major Thorpe has served with dis
tinction in various branches of army
life, and has been detailed for spec-
ial work to the Ohio State University,
to the University of California, etc.
Riverside is one of the few schools
in America operating a special de
partment for candidates for the gov
ernment academies, and is perhaps
the only school in America whose
i work in this connection is supervised,
■ personally, by a graduate of and a
’ recent teacher at West Point.
i Col. Beaver states that the term
I just closed is one of the most suc
i cessful in the history of Riverside
I and the prospects for the fall term
’ are most encouraging.
J NEW POINT. >
i The committee appointed to pro
| cure a teacher for New Point school
is composed of J. B. Fite, Jesse Sal
ter, R. A. Nicholson and John F.
I McMath. They have just closed a con
tract with Miss Ruth Chappell who
taught the Howell school near Leslie
i this year. Miss Chappell will open
: school next Monday and conduct it
| for three months.
Three miles west of Americus is
I a wheat field of two and ona.-half
; acres that has just yieldei 98 bushels
j of fine wheat to A. H. Jennings, the
j owner. Mr. Jennings’ long suit, how
! ever is not farming, but stock rais
j ing. His Poland-China hogs and Hol
| stein cattle are finer f han his wheat
j field ever was. Jesse Salter is now
i bragging on a fine corn acreage on
| his farm near this Jennings wheat
field. These gentlemen seem tc be
raising crops that will keep The Mc-
Math mill grinding day and night for
a long time. This community is on
the upward grade altogether.
The religious rally at Rhehoboth
church three miles west of Americus
last Sunday was a complete success
The pastor, Rev. H. D. Warnock, wa:
ably assisted by several others and
fine preaching and lecturing was
heard. There was a magnificent din
ner and a large crowd which did full
justice to the tempting eatables.
