CAPITOL ISSUE
WILL; GET NEW
AIRING MONDAY
ATLANTA, Aug. 2.—The capital
removal bill will come up again Mon
! day in the shape of a committee hear
ing on the bill to have a referendum
taken by the people on the proposi
tion to repair the capital in Atlanta
!or build a new one in Macon. The
1 Atlanta proposition is burdened with
:an expenditure of $2,000,000 alto
gether unnecessary, as it will require
not one tenth of that amount to put
the present building in good shape.
Whatever the outcome of the refer
i endum, it will not be binding or le
gal.
Atlanta committees are piping hot
over the move of Macon, which they
charge as being unfair and a piece
of “political trickery”, as well as a
bold attempt to deceive the people
of Georgia.
Indications are that before the ses
sion ends, much bitterness will be
hown on both sides.
TARDY CORPORATIONS
URGED TO ACT QUICKLY
ATLANTA, Aug. 2.—The corpor
ations of the state of Georgia have
been unusually prompt this year in
filing their capital stock returns ac
cording to Collector of Internal Rev
enue A. 0. Blalock, who has made
' a casual survey of the mass of re
, ports which swamped his office the
few days previous to August 1, the
last day upon which they can be leg
ally returned under the law.
There has been no indication on the
part of the internal revenue depart
ment to extend the time for the tar
dy corporations, although this prece
i dent has been set in other tax collec
i tions. If this is done, it will be an
i nounced just as soon as the order is
I issued from Washington.
Altogether Mr. Blalock states that
Georgia concerns have shown a
' knowledge of the requirements of the
’statutes which stamp them, as alert
I and law-abiding.
Corporations that failed, to file
their returns on time are urged to do
so at once, stating what reasons, if
any they had for neglecting to do so
on time. It is the disposition of the
department to be lenient wih those
who had good reasons for overtak
ing this matter. |. a .
