JIMMY COON WINS THE RACE.
AND now the sun was high and
Jimmy Coon drove all of his
companions to catching grasshoppers,
telling them that he had a lovely
prize to give the wiV'T-
You would have .j to see
them all jumping to » those
grasshoppers. But aft. had
worked a long time Tedd. ini
had four. Bobby Skunk t-,
Everyone was perfectly astonished
at the number of grasshoppers Jim
my Coon had.
Cousin Bruin had eight. Cousin
Brum was so cleveg with his big
paws, and he gave such a great
blow, and he ate a lot, just to see
how they tasted.
Jimmy Coon sat on one side urging
them on, and didn’t work at all. “Why
don’t you try?” said Teddy Possum.
“Well I don’t have to try, for I

Bruin had caught for he was afraid
Cousin Bruin would eat all of his
eignt on the way.
“Now,” said Chatterbox, “sit
down in a row and I will count, and
it will all be perfectly fair. Where
is the prize? I won’t begin until I
have that in a safe place and Ned
Chipmunk can help me count.
So Jimmy Coon took him to a hol
low tree and showed him five beau
tiful turtle eggs in a little corner,
v ered with moss. Chatterbox told
Jack, the gray squirrel, to
. and see that no one took the
; Chatterbox said the way to
count to match grass hoppers,
so Teds; ' and Bobby Skunk
and Cor n each brough one
and they *' to lay them side
by side," wi Coon last of

“That’s one, /' Chatterbox,
“and you, Jim Ci w, are to keep the
score.”
“One,” said Jim Crow. “Now two,”
said Chatterbox, and “Two” said Jim
Crow. Now Bobby Skunk fell out
of the race-for he only had two, and
Cousin Bruin jumped up and put
Bobby’s two in his mouth, for he
thought it was silly to keep them
since Bobby was out of the race
When they came to four, Teddy
Possum fell out —for l.e only had
four. So Cous’n Bruin ate,.his four
also. Then Cousin Bruin and Jimmy
matched grasshoppers up to eight,
and as Cousin Bruin only had eight
he just ate his eight. But Jimmy
Coon kept on bringing more and more
one by one, and everyone listened to
hear Chatterbox still counting.“Sixty
seven, sixty-eight, sixty-nine,” Jim
Crow repeated after him, and they
counted in all 96 for Jimmy Coon:
