PEXER RABBIT EXPLAINS
NOW in that grasshopper race—or
rather, the race to see who could
catch the most grasshoppers, Jimmy
Coon had 96. BA beat all the other
animals. The grasshoppers were laid
out in a row, and you never saw
such a long row.
“Where in the world did you get
all those grasshoppers?” said Teddy
Possum, “It looks like magic! We

worked just as hard as we could and
Cousin Bruin only caught eight.
“Well, I know there is nothing fair
about it,” said Cousin Bruin, “and
I will just eat them to see if they
are real, for if it is magic, perhaps
they aren’t real.”
“No you don’t! You wait and see
if anyone knows anything about it.
Now, did anyone see Jimmy Coon
catch those grasshoppers?”
And no one said a single word

untit little Peter Rabbit spoke up in
a very small voice—for he was scared
and so afraid of his own voice that
Cousin Bruin roared, “Louder, loud
er, I can’t hear a word you say.”
“Well, early this morning, when I
was out in Farmer Jones’ field help
ing him to dig his carrots, I saw
Jimmy Coon in the meadow going
up and down and he had a big bag
on his arm and he seemed to be put
ting something into it.”
“That’s just like Jimmy Coon,”
murmured Teddy Possum, “and was
he jumping up and down?”
“No,” sadi little Peter, “he was
just scraping something in to his
bag.”
“Robin P.' d-vest, you are up early
—did you see Jimmy Coon?”
Mrs. Robin R ’-vest was pulling a
fat worm out of the ground for the
breakfast of her ye rug children, and
she thoughtfully bit off the end of
the tail of the fat worm, just as you
would the end of a pencil in school,
when the teacher asks you to spell
“phthisic.” 1 You know it helps a
lot.
(And you might like to know that
the rest of the worm crawled back
into the hole.)
“Yes,” said Mrs. Red-vest, “it was
grasshoppers. And if any of you
were up early enough in the morn
ing, you would know that it is the
only right time to catch grasshoppers
for their wings are so wet that they
can’t fly or hop.”
“What do you know about that!”
snapped Teddy Possum. “That isn t
magic, and I have heard that the
early bird catches the worm. By the
way, where is your worm, Mrs. Red
vest?”
