CHUB’S LESSON
POOR little Chub Ursus was hang?
ing on to that log which was turn
ing over and over, and he had his
claws so deep in the bark that he
couldn’t unfasten them when the log
turned, so that his head was out of
water. The log turned and turned,
and you would have 1 nought it never
would stop.
Aunt Matilda watched from the
bank, and soon .-he became anvious
and growled softly, which meant in
bear language, “For Goodness sake,
jump off and come to shore.”
Chub got more and more fright
ened, and the more frightened he
became, the tighter he hung on.
Cousin Bruin, with Teddy* Possum

and Jimmy Coon, enjoyed the little
Chub’s log turning very much; they
thought it the finest show they had
seen in many a day.
Cousin Bruin said: “Well, I can
trust Aunt Matilda to take care of
her own child, but 1t does seem as

if that old log would never stop turn
ing. But Aunt Matilda is the best
kindergarten teacher I ever knew,
and I never knew her to lose a child
by accident yet—so Chun will be all
right.”
“Well, Chub is as stupid as any
bear cub I ever saw,” said Jimmy
Coon in a low voice to Teddy Pos
sum, “even if he is my father’s sec
on cousin. Why. inthunder doesn’t
he let go and swim to shore?”
Cousin Bruin heard what Jimmy
Coon said, and it made him a little
very, but he gave Jimmy
Coon Playful pat that knocked him
over o il ie grass but didn’t hurt him
a bit, a: ’ "aid: “Now there, Jim
my Coon, ‘■’’ke that for running
down yiur ow" family, even if they
are only cousin Aunt Matilda Ur
sus couldn’t have a stupid child—•
not if she tried—and she is trying
and I can’t see any lesson?”
“What’s the lesson?” whispered
Teddy Possum. “I am as smart as
any one, and so are all my family,
and I can’t see any lesson?”
“The lesson she is teaching is just
as plain as your long ta?l and anyone
"an see that as plain as can be. She
is .teaching Chub that if he makes
a mistake ne must not keep on doing
it, but do something else and swim
for shore.”
“That’s a funny way to teach a
’nsson —to nearly drown poor little
Chub,” whispered Jimmy Coon.
While all this talking was going
n, Aunt Matilda Ur.-sus was wratch
ing from the bank, and when she saw
that hub was nearly worn out,’she
plunged into the pool.. And in the
wink of an eye, she grabbed him
from the log, and wftn ont flip o
her huge paw threw him gasping and
snuffling on to the bank. j
