epochal strides
in EDUCATION BY
GA. LEGISLATURE
ATLANTA, Aug. 13.—The Geor
gia Legislature made more progress
in education Tuesday than it has
since the Civil War when it passed
and sent to the Governor two of
the vital school measures which have
been before them for the past two
months, first being the local school
tax law and the other ocdnfication
and amendment of all existing school
statutes, among which is the provi
sion that every child shall go through
the seventh grade.
The local school tax is compulsory
and provided for six months school
ing each year, the additional ex
pense to be borne by local taxation.
Advocates of both measures figure
that in ten or twelve years illiter
acy will be a thing unknown among
the younger generation of Georgians.
