■ Adoo to assist in the work of dis
i tributing the first Liberty Loan and
I ultimately became director of the
War Loan Organization in charge of
: the Liberty Loan and War Savings
Committee throughout the country.
He served until the Victory Loan
campaign was brought to a success-
H ful close, resigning June 15, 1919.
The special feature of his work
in organizing the Liberty Loan
drives which will make his services
■ of the utmost value to the nation
wide and Every Name campaign of
the church, is that it brought him in
to intimate touch with loan commit
tees in all parts of the country. He
i has probably as wide a circle of ac
quaintances as any man in Ameri
; ca among the earnest men and wom
en whose patriotic energy and zeal
made the national loans so success
ful. At the height of these cam
i paigns, Mr. Franklin had an organi
zation of over two million men and
j women enlisted in the work, while
more than twenty million people be- 1
; came purchasers of the Liberty
I Bonds.
Like the scores of other promi- j
nent laymen who in this movement
are sacrificing business interests to J
promote the success of the cam- j
paign, Mr. Franklin is earnestly in
favor of a larger participation by
1 business men in the work of the ’
I church. He was quoted by Rev. Mr,
I Lawrence.
i “I think one of the greatest mis- '
■ takes made in the administration of |
! the churches is in leaving their fi- •
; nancial affairs in the hands of the 1
! clergy. They are called to higher .
j duties than that of raising money j
' and money is the last thing they
; ought to be compelled to think about.
It is a shame to have clergymen go-
ing about constantly with hat in
hand, begging for funds. The busi
ness of the church ought to be run
i by business men, and I believe if it
! can be arranged that in every dio
cese and parish of the Episcopal
! church throughout the land there
i shall be a layman, a successful busi-
I ness man, entrusted with the task
of managing the business and finan
ces of the church, the church will
j prosper to a degree not hitherto at
tained, the needed funds will be rais
j ed in a dignified way and the odium
of constant begging will be lifted
! from it.” >
Mr. Lawrence announced that a
special committee to handle the drive
i in this parish would be named very
' shortly.
DESTROY COTTON STALKS
EARLY, MARSHALL URGES
An appeal to the farmers to de
stroy their cotton stalks as early as
possible so as to starve the weevils
before frost is being sent out to
farmers of Sumter county by George
O. Marshall, county agent. Mr.
Marshall calls this the greatest sin
gle fight that can be made on the
weevil. Here is the text of his let
ter:
“Do you know you can help the
farmers of Sumter county to make
more cotton next year?
“Encourage every farmer you see
to kill every cotton stalk as soon as
the last cotton is picked. He need
not necessarily plow under nor burn
the stalks but cut them dbwn or
plow them up to die as long before
the first frost as possible.
“If this is done what will be the
result?
“The grown weevils at that time,
and those hatching from the dead
stalks later, will leave this field in
search of green cotton. If they do
not find it they will go into winter
quarters hungry and partly exhaust
ed, and will either not live through
the winter or starve before going
into hibernation. Weevils cannot
go into hibernation, hungry and live
through the winter.
“Please help your county and
yourself by promoting this idea all
you can.
“Talk it and act. It means some
thing to everybody in the county.
“This is the greatest single fight
that can be made on the weevil.”

SANDRA THE JEALOUS
a new serial story by
JANE PHELPS.
Author of “The Promoter’s Wife,” and Other Stories.
(Copyright by George Mathew Adams.)
SANDRA IS FRIGHTENED.
CHAPTER LXVI.
AN officer came soon after 1 had
dressed and took a list of all
that was mising, with a description ;
of each article. He gave scant hope I
that he would catch the burglar, giv- '
ing, as at least one reason, the tick- !
et in my bag.
“You see, if he had had to stop at i
the ticket office and buy a ticket to .
get out of town, it would be one more !
clue. But all he had to do was to
walk to the gate and get in the
crowd going through.”
Again I wondered what Everett i
would say when he heard this. Had ;
I not disobeyed him and followed I
him to the station, I should not have |
bought the ticket and the burglar i
could not have used it.
I had gone to see Hetty’s friend to j
find out more about Leola, and I
Thomas had been injured and the ■
motor car damaged. I had allowed '
the burglar who had shot James to j
get away with my jewels, because I j
had bought a ticket to New York ;
when he had told me I shouldn’t go.
He would come home to an upset
household, my sapphires gone, both
men unable to wait upon him, and
a lot of notoriety besides—some
thing he abhorred. .
Thinking of it all made me so ner
vous I could scarcely bear it. I was
not a normal woman perhaps—l was
too immature, too young. Certainly
I was not normal where Everett was
concerned. He would come home,
find I had followed him to the sta
tion, and then he would hear of the
robbery—if he had not already done
so, and I would be so unhappy be
cause of his displeasure that I would
cry again and be utterly miserable.
Then, too, the presence of an of
. ’he house was upsetting. He
had been so curious, had asked so
many questions as to why I had that
ticket to New York, that I felt hor
ribly uncomfortable. It was as if I
knew the burglar and had helped
him get away. I told Mrs. Gray
when I could keep still no longer.
“Don’t mind him,” she told me.
“They have to be suspicious, you
know. It was unfortunate that you
had it, that is all.”
“Mrs. Gray do you suppose Ev—
Mr. Graham will blame me for all
that has happened?” I could keep
still no longer. And she looked so
sympathetic, so kind, that I just
blurted out: “He told-me he would
not take me, but I went to the sta
tion just the same, and tried to
follow him. Then I was so disap
pointed I didn't know what to do, so
I proposed the visit to Hetty’s friend
Then Thomas was hurt and the ma
chine damaged. But if I had gone
with him and taken my jewelry
there would have been nothing much
for the burglar to have taken, and
perhaps no om? wrnuld not have been
shot. Oh, dear, I seem to have been
to blame for everything that has
“Don’t feel that way, Mrs. Gra
ham. I am sorry you went against
your husband’s wishes, and so had
that ticket for the burglar—yet af
ter all he may not have used it. But
accidents are unavoidable. Take it
all in all, I consider you have been
very fortunate. You might have
been terribly injured in the automo
bile accident, and you might have
been shot by the burglar instead of
James.”
“But Mrs. rGay—would he have
scolded his first—the first Mrs. Gra
ham?”
“Mercy, no! he never scolded her
for anything!” Then recollecting:
“He won’t scold you either. He will
be too thankful you are not injur
ed,” but I noticed that when she
spoke so impulsively—for her—of
Leola, she had flushed as if she had
regretted her words, and had looked
remorsefully at me.
“You are sure he wouldn’t have
scolded her?”
“I never heard him say a cross
word to her,” she acknowledged.
“Then he shan’t scold me! Just
because he was unhappy because of
some things she did, I am not going
to be treated like a child, and made
to walk a crack. It isn’t fair!’
The door bell rang just then.
Hetty brought me a yellow message.
I opened it and rea3:
“Home late tonight. Do not sit
up for me.—Everett.”
To Be Continued.
