KEEP BATTERY
PLATESCOVERED
AT ALL TIMES
I .
“If a battery is allowed to go for
I any length of time without having the
plates fully covered with the electro
lyte (water and acid) its usefulness
will be impaired seriously, if it is not
entirely ruined,” said Asa Pittman,
manager of the Americus Battery
Company, the local Vesta Battery
Service Station, on Jackson street.
The reason for this, according to
Mr. Pittman, is the formation of sul
phate of lead on the plates when left
exposed to the aid. This sulphate of
lead is a non-conductor of electricity
and acts as insulator to prevent the
flow of current.
If the acid, is allowed to get low in
the battery so that only part of the
I plate is overed the remainder soon
I becomes coated so that when the bat-
Itery is filled, it does not function as
j powerfhlly as before.
Where the coating is not to heavy
a long slow charge will dissolve it and
save the battery. A heavy rate of
charge wolld cahse overheating and
flhin the battery.
J Some car owners cannot under
stand why it sometimes takes four or
five days to charge a battery. Heavy
( sulphation is the reason. The mo
-1 torist should not complain if it takes
longer than he expected to get the
battery in shape, for.the service man
s‘having to work just that much hard
er to save the battery.
Mr. Pittman the V esta sta
tion is always ready to fill your bat
tery wies distilled water free of
charge, no matter what make it is.
This little attention will often save
i needless expense and delay due to
injured batteries.
