Information Always Short.
In announcing the price quotation!
service for cotton, the Bureau of j
Markets states that producers and j
even dealers interested in cotton ,
have always lacked sufficient reliable'
information as to the actual market |
values of the different grades of cot-j
ton in the various primary market;
and concentration points in the cot
ton belt. A recent amendment to i
the United States Cotton Futures act!
provided authority and funds to en-j
yj>le the secretary of agriculture to
inaugurate a quotation service which
would furnish producers and others
the needed information, particularly)
in view of the fact that, as a result)
of the amendment, an important out- j
let for ten of the lower grades of cot- j
ton wh'ch had previously been deliv
erable on future contracts had been
closed. The closing of this outlet
for these ten low grades of cotton]
has emphasized the need for a quota ]
j tion service of the kind which the
government is now establishing.
Gathering of Reports.
Reports of purchases and sales of
cotton will be gathered from country
buyers, country merchants, dealers,
brokers, commission merchants, fac
tors, mills, and others who buy or
sell cotton in the important country,
markets and concentration points'
throughout the cotton belt. On th ? )
basis of these reports, the Bureau]
of Markets will prepare and publish i
weekly bulletins showing the prices!
at Which the various grades of cotton
have actually been bought and sold
The bulletin issued from each of
the five districts headquarters will f
show cotton prices in a number of
markets in the territory immediately'
surrounding or adjacent to the dis-)
trict headquarters, and its distribu
tion will be largely confined to per )
sons in the district for which it i '
issued. No one bulletin will cove,
quotations for the entire cotton belt,
and it is intended that the bulletins
shall be prepared in a concise, readi
ly understandable form and given
such distribution that they will be of
local value to persons in the com
munities which receive them.
Plan of Distribution.
The information contained in the
bulletins will be telephoned or wir
ed at their expense to persons who
request such service. The complete
bulletins will be mailed to news
papers, postmasters, federal, state,
and county officers in each district,
I to dealers and others who furnish the
information on which the bulletins
are based, and to banks, cotton gins,
exchanges, oil mills, producers, and
others who desire to have them. It
is expected that the information con
tained in the bulletins will be given
widespread circulation and /will be
widspreaed circulation and will be
available to all who may be inter
ested.
In view of the general lack of
information as to the prices of cot
ton seed, the quotation service for
cotton will also include the actual
prices at which cotton seed is bought
and sold at a number of markets
selected for the purpose in each dis
trict.

A SUIT may have all the charac
** istics that fashion finds desir
able, and yet possess touches of in
dividuality all its own—as this model
for instance. Made of old blue ve
lour and squirrel fur, it pays its due
to the mode in accented hips and the
length of the coat, and then shows
its own initial ve by adding rows of
wool stitching and fluffy little tassels
in a surprisingly bright purple. j,
The belt, which has fortified itself
with two buckles, is purple suede.
For suits, as for the tailored dress,
the leather belt is rather better
style than the belt of self-material, ]
and one-inch widths are most used.
In addition to the plain suede or kid
skin there are fancy belts with novel
metal trimmings, and a rather unique
belt is made in four sections joined
with tiny silver buckles, a strip of
contrasting color in the front sec
tion.
It is many moons since felt has
been used in women’s hats for other !
than sports styles. The model illus-)
trated is made of a lovely soft felt
in gray, and the smart New York!
milliner who is reviving this material
reports unusual success.

TIRE NEEDS OF
TRUCKS DIFFER
WITH SERVICE
: ---
! “It is becoming generally known
. that different fields of motor truck
; service require different tire equip
ment," says J. W. Lott, manager of
the Americus Vulvanizing Company.
“For instance, solid tires are eco
nomical equipment on trucks engag
ed in slow-speed, heavy-duty service,
while pneumatics give good returns
in long distance transport, inter-ur
, ban freighting, and genera] trucking

] sential
“The Goodyear Tire and Rubber
i Company’s sales manager, L. C.
Rocklyjl, says that the first trucks
were*fitted with solid tires, for at
that time no other tires were avail
able Fully ten years ago the Good
year Tire and Rubber Company be
came convinced that there woujd be
, a great field for the pneumatic truck
tire. None had then been made.
Trucks were then in an experimental
stage, compare to today's develop
ment. They were generally laughed
at and derided for predicting a great
( future for the motor truck and pneu
matic truck tires.
“Goodyear has been the pioneer
in,developing, making and perfecting
pneumatic tires for motor trucks,
and has now developed a tire that
has long since passed the experimen
tal stage The company is not ask
ing truck makers, agents or users to
do any experimenting. •
“It was ten years ago that th«
company bought a number of trucks
for use about their factory. These
were all equipped with solid tires,
and were extremely primitive in
their construction The factory was
put to work making a pneumatic tire
that would better protect the motor

“With the tires that were develop
ed the trucks soon were capable of
performing more work, because with
pneumatic tires under them the driv
ers found it unnecessary to slow
down almost to stopping, as they had
previously done, for bumps and ob
structions on the street. Speeds
were higher and more miles covered
in a day.
“After a careful review of the sit
uation it was found that fabric tires
would never ‘do’ for motor trucks.
Fortunately, however, just at this
time experiments were started on
cord tires for electric passenger cars.
The principle of cord construction
was developed steadily until the cord
tire was made practical for the more
powerful gasoline cars. And final
ly, the development of the cord tire
was merged with the pneumatic
truck tire and the final cord pneu
matic truck tire was produced.
“So the cord type of tire came to
be preferred for these freighters.
Competitors continued to criticise
and deride, but Goodyear experts
kept on, had faith, made better and
better tires, and sold them.

the world that there was an exten
sive market for pneumatic tires;
when truck manufacturers and users
began to admit that they were right
—then the ‘other fellow’ began to
creep into the market that had been
created.
, “This is the situation today. Good
year deserves credit, as the first to
develop the cord principle now in
wide use for passenger cars and then
for trucks. By constant study, ex
periment and test, a tire was per
fected for both uses.
And through all this period of de
velopment sufficient time was taken
to attain perfection at every step,
and not till a reasonable degree of
perfection had been accomplished
were these tires offered to the motor
truck using public. And not only
is the company years ahead with this
type of tire as it stands today, but
it is still busily engaged in exten
sive research work in an attempt to
make them even better.’’
