G.O.P CHAIRMAN
and glass clash
Secretary Defends Treas
ury Department From
Party Slander
WASHINGTON, Jan. 14.—Tele
graphic correspondence betwen Sec
retary Glass and Chairman Hays, of
the republican national committee,
centering about the assertion of Mr.
Hays in his Denver speech last week
that the democratic administration
had sent out ‘‘thousands of tons of
propaganda to Liberty bond buyers,
food card signers, war workers, etc.,”
was nia<.< public tonight as an "en
tirely reprehensible p. cues of defa
mation.”
Secretary Glass, in a telegram to
Mr. Hays last Friday, the day follow
ing the republican chairman’s address
in Denvei, called attention* to a dis
patch quoting Mr. Hays as saying
“that the name of every buyer of
Liberty Bonds of the United States
was put on the democratic mailing
list for the forthcoming campaign,”
and asked that Mr. Hays “either pro
duce proof or publicly retract this
slander upon the treasury of the
United States.”
Replying the following day in a
telegram from Salt Lake City, Chair
man Hays denied that he had said
that the treasury secretary “had fur
nished the names of all buyers of
Liberty bonds for the use of the dem
ocratic committee as a mailing list,”
but that he did say “th it the demo
cratic administration sent thousands
of tons of propaganda to Liberty bond
buyers, food card signers, war work
ers, etc., during the paper shortage,
and while limiting the use of paper
by the press ,and that a large l part
of it was democratic political prop
aganda, and that all of it was paid for
by the taxpayers’ money.”
The republican/ chairman in his
telegram said he desired to call the
attention of Secretary Glass to what
he described as reliable information
that “the democratic committee has
even resorted to drawing drafts on
bankers in whose banks govern
ment funds are deposited, wiring
such bankers that they had already
drawn such drafts,” and in conclus
ion said he hoped the treasury sec
retary would “join with us in an ef
fort to make the coming campaign
a contest between two great politi
cal parties.”
Replying to Chairman Hays today,
Secretary Glass said the only part of
the chairman’s reply which was
“pertinent” to his previous telegram
was “the apparent denial” of the
press dispatch ascribing to the chair
man the statement as to the use of
list of Liberty bond buyers.
The chairman’s charge as to the '
sending out of tons of partisan polit
ical literature, Secretary Glass tele
graphed, conveyed “an implication of
gross stupidity, as well as down
right dishonesty,” which Mr. Glass
said he resented “as both false and
silly."
Denying that he had any know-1
ledge of the financial activities of
either the democratic or republican
national committees, or the chair
men as regards drawing of drafts
on banks having government depos
its without previous consent. Secre
tary Glass said: “It would not be as- I
tonishing to find that both of you
have repeatedly done this.” Agree
ment with Mrs. Hays that “this is no
time for little things,” is expressed
by the treasury secretary.

it for three years and have tried
it thoroughly, particularly for croup
and whooping cough. Last winter
our children had very bad coughs
and colds and we gave them Expec

whooping cough. In a few weeks
there was a great deal of whooping
cough in our neighborhood and we
tried our best to keep our children
away from it, but could not. They
were both exposed a number of times
and did not take it. After that they
were with children for a whole day
who had whooping cough. This was
positive proof to me that my children
had had the whooping cough and
that Cheney’s Expectorant had so
kept it in subjection that it had ap
peared only as an ordinary cold.”
