Jin Reveals a Smuggling Scheme by
Doc Certeis.
said, next morning, that my
training as a pilot would have to
of an intensive Variety. He had
been ordered to report at camp in
three days. He would leave the old
bus for me to run around in, with
Serg” at the joy-stick, of course.
She was a good old bus now that
had mended her ways. “Serg"
wanted to practice some stunts, too.
He had decided to advertise for a job
as an “airplane chauffeur.’’ He plan
ned to become a pioneer in a brand
new profession. There would be a
demand for experts like himself as
soon as rich men who could afford
it took the flying game.
“And so I’ll leave the old bus for
yon and ‘Serg,’’ ” said Jim, then he
added a warning:
i “But don’t you run away, in it
•lone, Sis! Does what I’m saying
make any impression on your brain
cells, my dear?”
“How could I get away alone in
an airship without the help of the
mechanics? There! You’re answer-
you goose!” I exclaimed.
“You couldn’t—unles_s ‘Serg’
makes his self-starter work. He's
been inventing it for a year, and the
darn thing is about due to go off,
I should say.’’
“Jim, you're always digging the
oddest suggestions out of your own
brain cells!”
“There’s a queer one, Sis, I’ve
been wanting to hand you for days,
but I didn’t get a good chance. Do
you remember the gink I saw on the
dock in New Fork? The man I call
ed Doc Certeis, in spite of the fact
that he was loading coffins onto a
tramp steamer?”
“The man pretended not to under
stand you. He answered you in
Spanish.”
“Well, what I haven't told you is
that when I was climbing over my

Seven Million Passenger Cars
and Trucks to Burn. Is Your
Car Protected Against This
Loss? ' '
Seven million passenger cars and trucks will be in use during 1920.
By the end of the year how many will have gone up in flames? How
many pleasure trips will be spoiled because the car lacked fire protec
tion? How many trucks will fail to deliver their valuable loads for the
same reason, and how much business will be lost through poor service
resulting? Most important of all how many lives will be lost under
burning cars?
In 1919 the increase in automobile fires lead insurance companies
to raise their rates. Proper fire protection would have prevented most
of this loss. Fire starts easily in a motor car and is just as easily put
out if the right means are at hand. The insurance companies recognize
this and give a reduction of 15% in fire insurance premiums when
proper extinguishers are installed. Fire protection for automobiles has
kept pace with other developments of industry. The PRYENE FIRE EX
TINGUISHER to-daj' is simple; can be used by women and children;
won’t freeze; won’t damage machinery or upholstery and above all puts
out the fire.
Do not delay but call at our store today and let us demonstrate this
wonderful extinguisher.

one of the buildings. My dear, I saw
i those same coffins, piled un in neat
rows, just as they were on the New
York dock!”
“My goodness gracious!” was the
only comment I could make.
“I stuck around on the wing of
the bus pretending to feel for flaws,
but actually making a mental photo
'of that room. And I swear to you,
Jane, that in one corner I saw a ma
ichine gun! Sis, I don’t go much on
I intuition, not for a strong man. as
I you know, but my hunch is that
j there’s one or more machine guns in
teach of those coffins!”
| I couldn’t help thinking of the ma-
I chine guns I had discovered in the
i basement of Certeis’ town house.
| “Cert is alive, sure!” said Jim posi
tively. “We’ve both seen him more
than once. And those guns are
mighty close to the border!”
“He’s one of the bandits, Jim! He
saved me from the gang that held
up the train!” I recited all of the
long story to my brother-in-law.
“Saved you, Jane? Nosir-e-e! He
knew you would go straight to the
kiddie. He preferred to trap you—
I under his own roof.”
“But for you, he would have suc
ceeded, Jimmy-boy,” I stammered.
“Cut the sob-stuff, honey,” said
Jim, not roughly, but in defense of
his own feelings.
“He expected to trap me! So that
was why the ancient Mona Lisa
stuck to me with her superstitions
and her mystery tales! That was why
'.he little girl spied upon me—and re
ported to the administrador!”
“And why the administrador clip
ped my wing with a bullet!” said Jim
very fiercely. “But that s all put be
ll nd us. You’re safe north of the
river, though I do wish you’d pack
up and go home before I leave. But
you won’t. You’ll wait for Bob. I
guess you’ll be all right, if you prom
ise never to get into the bus without
Berg’s permission.’’

THE HUNGRY WHALE.

curious manner.
“It s very hard swimming on dry

hqve peppermint creams in the sea.
And how I do love them!”
“Peppermint creams,” cried Nick.
“Why, it says in my reader that
whales eat little fishes. It’s on page
six.”
“I know,” answered the whale.
“That’s very true. But just because

And the, whale blew another big spout
of water from the top of his head.
“You see,” he said, “my eyes are too
small to cry all the tears I feel like
crying.” And he spouted again.
All this time Nancy was searching
in her pocket. Suddenly she held up
a beautiful round peppermint cream.
“Here, Mr. Whale, you may have
this,” she said laying it on the ground.
“Oh, thank you!” smiled the whale,
showing all his teeth. “This is the
happiest moment of my life.” And
he licked his lips so loudly it sounded
like a thunderstorm. “Do you come
this way- often?”
“We may be back,” answered Nan

monkey now. Please tell us if you
see him.”
And the whale promised.
