In len Minutes the Hoard of Muni
tions May Send Me Off With
the Ghost.
IT required but the touch of a fin
• ger to set off the hoard of muni
tions in the loft of the adobe store
house, nevertheless it took all the
force I could nut into my thin white
hand to turn on the current. As soon
as the deed was accomplished, I came
out of my delirium. It was as if the
will power fthich had carried my sick
body on its. awful mission had at last
cleared my troubled brain.
I came out of my delirium to find
myself saying, “In ten minutes—”
and I was astonished to find myself
standing at the door of the haunted
room. However, it did not astonish
me to see the ghostly figure of a wom
an moving slowly through the moon
lit spaces of the place.
1 trembled with weakness, I shiv
ered with the cold of a bright De
cember night as I clung to the hand
rail of the outside stairway and
watched the willowy, white form of
the murdered wife glide toward a
window.
“Delirious or sane, I’m not to be
deceived a second time by the same
old ghost,” I said to myself. “In
ten minutes, this building will blow
up, and that poor ghost is going to
be robbed of a habitation,” I added.
“In ten minutes— ’’

- time that unless I got away from that
doomed building at once, I, Jane
Lorimer, would be—in ten minutes
- —even as that white deceiving shade!
I clutched at the hand rail and
- tried to descend the stairs which I
' i had lately climbed so swiftly’. But
■ : my muscles were as soft as those of
i |an infant and my body collapsed in
_■ a heap on the steps.
“In ten minutes, I will know all
: that that poor wondering ghost
t ■ knows,” I thought, but I was quite
! unafraid of the prospect.
I What would happen to me after
’ the horrible roar of the explosion?
: Where would I be?
I Far—very far—from my dear hus-
i band!
That thought hurt me, and rous-

would need me. I tried to call his
• i name but not a sound left my lips. ■
I Though I hadn't the strength to
| speak, my hearing had grown acute.
; Listening for the explosion, I caught
' I the hurry of running feet on the
pavement of the patio. I hoped—l
i prayed that nobody was coming near
1 the doomed building, but I couldn’t
■ even whisper a warning.
Half of the ten minutes was gone,
I felt sure. I opened my eyes and i
looked up at a glorious star which I
i hung in the zenith.
“This is a queer place for a nice, j

As death came closer, second by

The echoing steps came nearer. I
