FOR ILLITERATES
State Worker, Makes
Po’verful Plea For
Them
A powerful plea for support of the
movement to banish adult illiteracy
tn Sumter county is contained in a
lssued toda V b J’ Mrs - Eliza-
Beth \\ illiams Moore, state organizer
lor tne Georgia Illiteracy Commis
sion, who is spending this week or
ganizing the work of teaching the il
literate adult whites to read and
write. Accompanied by Mrs. Olin
Williams, county demonstration
agent, Mrs. Moore is attempting this
week to reach every white illiterate
in the county and get the work of
teaching them under way. The work
among the negroes has been almost
completed here, having been taken
hold of with avidity by the members
of that race.
Said Mrs. Moore:
The world’s arch enemies today
are militarism, lack of self-control
and ignorance. The first two thrive

Why BnmswickTires
Win Preference
There are two main reasons—one, the name itself,
which certifies superfine value—the other, that time
tells the same story.
Thus reputation and performance unite in giving
you all you expect—and more.
•Yet Bruns wicks cost no more than like-type tires*
Many motorists would pay more readily, but the
Brunswick idea is to GIVE the utmost, rather than
to GET the utmost. And this has been true since 1845.
You can appreciate what Brunswick Standards mean
by trying ONE Brunswick Tire. It will be a reve
lation. You’ll agree that you could not buy a better,
regardless of price.
And, like other motorists, you’ll decide to have
ALL Brunswicks. Then you’ll know supreme satis
faction from your tires longer life, minimum
trouble, lower cost.

j chiefly by the support of the last.
I Illiteracy is the heaviest burden of
> Georgia today. Every man, woman
| ana caild who has had any schooling
! should be concerned and can do some
i thing to eliminate illiteracy.
I "Are you a school trustee? If so,
; help organize a class in your district.
| If there be one illiterate in your
I community think of him as being hu
man by birth just as you are and that
he is illiterate not from choice, but
from lack of opportunity.
“Are you a teacher? If so, you
| have no excuse tor not giving your
i support to some plan to reduce the
j illiteracy in your district. At least
J you can persuade one grown person
1 <.o let you teach him or ner.
"Are you a farm demonstrator?
I 1 hen remember that no matter what
your subject may be, this topic is
1 pertinent.
“Are you a minister of the Gospel?
Lay it upon the conscience of your
i people to perform this act of Chris
tian duty and mercy. If you are a
I Baptist you are under obligation as
a member of the Southern Baptist
church to assist in this most noble
work. If you really believe that:
“ ‘The truth shall make them free,’
you will not hesitate.
“Are you a legislator? If so, dem
onstrate your vision and your patriot
ism by causing th j state to make pro
visions for the teaching of all the
people.
“Are you the son or daughter of
an illiterate parent? Then you
could not do a more beautiful and'
filial duty than to persuade one who
has done so much for you. Put a
new joy into the years that are grow
ing dim and unsatisfying.
“Are you a club woman? Then
remember that this commission is
largely the child of your own organ
ization. You can give it not only
your loyal support, but your vigor
ous public advocacy. Talk discreet
ly, persuade tactfully, work diligent
ly, and give devotedly to this great
call.
“Are you a patriot anyway? If so,
talk and’ work for the campaign
against illiteracy in Georgia and re
member that the Huns today are put
ting more reliance in ignorance to
day than in shot and shell.
“Illiteracy I have found to be a
family trait—the older members
.failed to get an education; therefore
the children and grand children have
suffered.
“These neglected people have lost
faith in themselves; failing to get an
education in early life, they have
built a wall around their lives thafc
can be penetrated only by a capable,
sympathetic friend or teacher.
“To deny every one of our peo
ple the chance even to read the word

of God is to violate the very spirit of '
Christianity. It is pathetic and in
tolerable that hundreds of worthy
people cannot read or write the let
ters between themselves and their
boys and girls a distance away.
Furthermore, to save the world, the
efficiency of capacity must be over
matched by the intelligence. How
can this be done with one who can j
neither read nor write?”
