FARMERS MAKE
WAR ON WEEVILS
Pest Being Picked Off
Cotton Plants Suc
cessfully
Gordon Heys, whose fine farm is
located three miles east of Ameri-)
cus on the River road, was in the I
city Tuesday and while here stated
his experience in picking boll weevils
there. Ten negroes in 20 acres of
young cotton, Mr. Heys said, gath
ered 895 boll weevils in a single day,j
which means that milions /of the
pests might have been germinated
before the end of the coton growing
season if they were not destroyed.

’He will continue picking them, and
i believes this method one of the sur
' est yet devised for the production
'of cotton under weevil conditions.
Dr. E. L. Bridges, who came from
Ellaville for a day here on business,
is also a believer in picking the wee
a ils off cotton plants before the
souares develop, and while the wee
vils are young, and unable to do
much damage. He states that he
picked 5,200 weevils off 40 acres of
cotton on his plantation in Schley
county, and expressed the opinion
that as many more remained there
now. He reports that his oats this
season will yield from 75 to 100
bushels to the acre, and that his rye
will exceed last year’s yield when he
gathered 18 bushels to the acre
planted.
