JURY FOR MERCY
FOR MRS. GRADY
Finds Her Guilty of
Bringing Saws Into
Jail
“Oh, God!” spoken low and hard
ly audible even to those seated close
» beside her, was the exclamation that
escaped the lips of Mrs. Thelma
Speed Grady, wife of C. L. Grady,
when a jury in Sumter Superior
Court returned a verdict late Thurs
day finding her guilty of a felony.
The jury’s verdict carried with it a
recommendation that Mrs. Grady be
given a misdemeanor punishment.
The specific charge of which she was
conviced was that of furnishing to a
prisoner tools and materials to as
sist him to escape. These, the state
alleged, were furnished by Mrs.
Grady to her husband, who is held
on a number of charges all grow
ing out of illegal check transactions.
Mrs. Grady, who is a comely blond,
about twenty years old, sat with her
husband and her. counsel, John Al
len Fort, throughout the trial, and
gave little evidence of nervousness
at any time. She wore a natty tail
ored suit, with short skirt and a geor
gette waist, the collar of lignt-color
ed chiffon, and a broad brimmed hat
which almost completely 1 id her fea
tures from the curious crowd that
had assembled in the courtroom. Her
well-manicured fingers and general
appearance gave no indication of the
two weeks she had been confined in
the common jail of Sumter county,
nor was this referred to throughout
the hearing.
Sheriff First Witness.
The trial of Mrs. Grady began im
mediately upon the convening of the
afternoon session of court, Sheriff
Harvey being the first witness called.
He told of having found three saw
blades and a blow pot concealed in
Grady’s cell and on top of the cage
in which the prisoners are confined
at night. The saws, he said, were
in the cell itself, while the blow pot
was outside the cage. He also de
scribed the damage done the bars of
the jail.
Robert Clark a white prisoner, was
the next witness, and he testified he
saw Mrs. Grady hand the saws and
blow pot to her husband in the jail,
and that Grady and Thurman Young,
another prisoner, cut away the bars
found damaged by Sheriff Harvey.
He also told of the several prisoners
having torn blankets into strips and
knotting them together, preparatory
to the escape they had planned to ef
fect. Walter Wilson and Sam Duck
worth, two convicted murders, he
said, were among those who had

“slit” on the inside, and, apparently,
this slit might have contained the
several saws found in the jail.. Young
swore that Grady dropped the han ?

Grady, while visitin' him before her
arrest, put her hand into this, se

his own character was bad and that
he was an ex-convict.
Sheriff Harvey was then recalled
and told of several escapades in
which Robert Clark had engaged, and
gave as his opinion that the boy
could not help stealing. Here Solici

After brief addresses by Solicitor

and deliberated several hours before
reaching a verdict about 7 o’clock.
