MINUTE CANNED IN PLANT HERE
Plant Just Beginning Operations, To Increase Out
put Rapidly- More Workers
Needed
Two hundred workers employed by
the Americus Canning Co., subsidiary
of Roberts Bros., Baltimore canners,
are turning out 48 No. 2 1-2 cans of
peaches per minute at the packing
plant on Hampton street, and the
place is a scene of unusual activity
nowadavs. The plant has just started
in operation, but already good prog
ress has been made, and as soon as
additional workers caa be secured
two additional canning machines will
be put into operation, increasing the
output of the plant to just three
times what it is now.
Several years ago rvooerts Bros,
operated the plant here, Messrs. Lan
urell being their representatives in
Americus, and these gentlemen came
here this year to arrange for the
opening of the plant. They have re
turned, however, to Baltimore, and
the plant now is being operated un
der the supervision of E. R. McShane,
H. L. Bolden and S. E. Roberts, all
of whom are interested in t|ie Amer
icus Canning Co. Mr. McShdne is ac
tive manager of the local plant while
it is in operation.
165 Can Capacity
“We are packing now No. 2 1-2
cans,” he said, “and the one machine
we have in operation has a capacity
of 165 cans a minute, but it is only
putting up 48 cans, as the workers
have not yet learned to do their work
rapidly. Later on, after they have
become accustomed to their duties,
we will be able to operate at full
speed, and when we have enough help
we will put the other machines in
operation. «
“All of the peaches we are packing
today are put up entirely without
sugar, and they are processed in the
cans. No solder or acid of any kind
is used in sealing the cans, which are
strictly sanitary, being sealed by ma
chinery and without being touched by
the.human hand After going into the
can. The peaches are processed after
being sealed by being immersed in a
bath of boiling water for a time suf
ficient to guarantee their keeping in
perfect condition until the can is op
ened. About two hundred and fifty
cans are processed at one time, and

these are then placed in cold water
where they remain until cooled.
“The peaches after being stoned are
passed into the cans, hull and all, but
this hull is loosened during the pro
cessing, and the housewife who makes
pies of them months hence, or soon
er, may easily remove this with the
fingers. The water placed in Jhe
cans is the same that you use every
day and is drawn from the city water
system, being first heated by passing
through a steam heated pipe. No live
steam touches this water, however, as
it is heated while passing in its own
pipe through another.”
Table Fruit Next
Next week, Mr. McShane said the
plant may begin the packing of ta
ble peaches, these being packed in
thick syrup, and when properly can
ned making a product much superior
to the California product, which de
pends almost entirely upon sugar for
its flavor, while the natural delicacy
of the Georgia peach goes into the
canned article turned out at the lo
cal plant. The canning company does
not buy “culls’’ as so many people
here think, but instead purchase
whole orchards, canning the entire
yield, and using only superior fruit.
The fruit being canned this week is
that from the Feagin orchard, the
season’s yield of which was purchased
recently.
Although it is not the present in
tention of the canning company to
"an anything but peaches, plans' are
under consideration for the packing
of a large quantity of vegetables this
season, and Mr. McShane stated that
the company would be glad to contin
ue the plant in operation here regu
larly, if proper co-operation could
be secured between Americus busi
ness men and producers of vegetables
and fruit suitable for canning. The
pay-roll of the plant when in full op
eration is about SI,OOO a week, and
at present it is more than SSOO.
